Robert was born in Watertown on February 14, 1921, the son of Michael and Ida (Fagan) O’Brien. He was raised and educated in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School with the class of 1938. He studied civil engineering at UMass Amherst and received his Bachelor’s degree in 1943.
Mr. O’Brien served in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed with the Army Corps of Engineers in Europe. He returned to Watertown in 1946 and married June Marie (Kenny) in 1947. He worked as an engineer in petrochemical construction for the former E. B. Badger & Sons (acquired by Raytheon) in Cambridge for forty-five years.
Mr. O’Brien was an active sportsman all his life. He played football and basketball in high school and college, and continued to play tennis, squash and golf regularly into his eighties.
During his career, he moved with his family to various locations including Texas, Louisiana, England, Australia, Holland, France, Belgium and Italy.
In 1973, Mr. O’Brien and his family settled in Sudbury. He retired as Vice President of construction at Raytheon in 1996.
He is survived by two sons, John K. O’Brien of Sudbury, Robert F. O’Brien, Jr. of Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Candace A. O’Brien of Waltham; two grandchildren, Alexia K. O’Brien and Cullen R. O’Brien of Woodstock MD.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 160 Concord Road, Sudbury. Burial will follow at Wadsworth Cemetery in Sudbury.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Duckett-J. S. Waterman Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Rt. 20, Sudbury.
