Luke Guerin, age 32, of Los Angeles, CA, formerly of Weston, MA, passed away on July 10, 2023. He was born on July 20, 1990, in Boston, and was the beloved son of Jeanne and Jack Guerin. Luke was a loving brother to Adam and Sophia Guerin, and beloved grand nephew to Stephanie Bonica. He also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of his extended family.
Luke's magnetic personality and kind-hearted nature left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. With his quick wit, humor and a knack for using puns, he had a unique ability to bring laughter and joy to every room he entered. His kind and compassionate demeanor endeared him to family, friends, teammates, coworkers and new acquaintances. He was also known for consistently checking in on loved ones and friends. With a passion for comedy, he always had a new joke ready to share adding joy to his exchanges.
Luke graduated from Weston High School in 2008 and left a legacy through his academics, athletics, and most importantly his friendship. He displayed discipline, determination, and tenacity both in the classroom and on the field, quick with an answer to a question and joke to make you laugh at the same time. He was a voracious reader and movie buff, finding meaning, lessons and connectedness in all kinds of stories. He was an exceptional student, consistently achieving academic excellence, earning the Scholar Athlete Award his senior year.
In athletics, he was known for his speed, agility and ability to “dangle” earning him the nickname of ‘LGDangles’, likely coined by Luke himself. He was a force to be reckoned with in soccer as a wide midfielder especially in his junior and senior year on varsity. On the wrestling mat, he bested opponents frequently, able to win in the last seconds of many underdog matches. His leadership qualities earned him the title of Tri-Captain in Wrestling his senior year, and his dedicated training manifested in winning the Dual County League Wrestling Tournament in 2007. On the lacrosse field, Luke continued to utilize his speed and athleticism as a midfielder. His commitment to sports was ultimately recognized with the "Most Athletic'' superlative.
Luke's academic journey continued at Vanderbilt University, where he majored in Economics and became an integral part of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He frequently made the Dean's list, showcasing his dedication to his studies. Within Kappa Sigma, he fostered friendship and brotherhood, leaving a lasting impact on his fellow members. While Luke started out as “LG” in high school, he evolved to “LG-zus”, ‘G-zus’, ‘Zeus’, ‘Zeusarita’, and then finally ‘Rita’. All of these nicknames were a testament to the connection that Luke shared with his Kappa Sigma brothers. During his time at Vanderbilt, he dove deeper into his passion for soccer, playing both intramural and club, as well as earning his referee certification.
Luke extended his gifts and skills to others. He volunteered as a soccer coach, leading his team to victory and sharing his passion for the sport with young players. Luke also volunteered regularly, reading to children and brightening their days with his warm presence.
Creatively, Luke expressed himself in many ways. His Vine videos were known to be legendary when the platform was still running. His freestyle-rapping skills were a testament to his intellect, wit, confidence, and ability to improvise. He also documented his athletic and social adventures through entertaining GoPro videos with fun and lighthearted soundtracks, leaving behind a visual legacy of his zest for life. His creativity extended into a love of bongo drumming that he would share at drum circles in Venice Beach or accompanying a friend’s performance on an open mic night. And his performances didn’t stop there. In fact, some of his most entertaining performances likely occurred on the karaoke stage, belting out a variety of tunes while engaging the crowd.
Born a summer baby, Luke always enjoyed spending time in the ocean. From boogie boarding, skim boarding and bodysurfing in the New England waves on family trips to ultimately surfing the California swells, Luke found his flow in the water. His journey as a surfer was admirable to witness, never hesitating to include or teach others in his days at the beach.
However, Luke was an all-season athlete, frequently going on alpine adventures with family and friends. His first ski lessons at age 3 occurred at frigid Smuggler’s Notch alongside his ski novice Mother. After switching to snowboarding at Mt. Saint Anne in Quebec, Luke navigated the icy trails of the East, not without injury. He rekindled his love for snowboarding in California after a 10-year hiatus with explorations to Mammoth Mountain frequently captured by his skilled use of the GoPro camera. Always wearing bright and retro ski colors or his latest animal onesie, Luke was a joy to be with in these beautiful mountains. His swagger and style while “shredding the gnar” were frequently admired by friends and bystanders. In one trip to Squaw Valley, some even said that he was the best on the mountain. Luke also explored the mountains of Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. His videos of these trips will serve as a testament to his talent on the board and his goofy and fun attitude everywhere else.
In his professional life, Luke empowered others by teaching them important technological tools. From his time at Oracle as a Cloud Solutions Engineer and Senior Facilitator, at Rimini Street as a Program Manager, and at Coupa as a Sales Enablement Manager, Luke excelled professionally and built a meaningful network of friendships along the way. His comedic edge and expertly-timed use of humor always livened up what would previously have been rather dry presentations.
Luke found a passion for travel too, exploring Italy, Israel, Bali, Germany, Prague, and Australia. As another outlet for his passion for soccer, Luke became an avid Liverpool FC fan. He made a solo, concerted effort to support Liverpool at Anfield Stadium and witnessed them victorious in a Champion’s League game, befriending other fans in the shared experience.
His caring and supportive nature made him a compassionate brother, always there for his siblings when they needed him. Family and friends will forever cherish Luke's legacy of kindness, compassion, wit, athleticism, goofiness, and love, beautiful attributes that endure through the grace of God. May God bless him forever in peace.
A Visitation will be held for Luke at St. Julia's Catholic Church, 374 Boston Post Rd, Weston, MA on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 10:00 AM prior to the Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, 320 Winter St., Norwood, MA.
