Born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Mr. Garrity spent most of his life in Ocean Township, New Jersey where he and his sister Nancy were raised by their parents Doris and James Garrity. Jim was a graduate of Asbury Park high school where he played Varsity basketball and baseball. He graduated from Monmouth College in 1964 and married Sandy Spino the same year. The couple remained in Ocean Township for 40 years where they raised a family and were very active in the community before retiring to Hobe Sound, Florida in 2003.
Prior to moving to Florida to enjoy family, Jim was the owner of Garrity’s Exxon in Wanamassa, NJ. Family, friends and customers who stopped into the station could always count on Jim for a helping hand as well as a few funny jokes. Jim also served the Ocean Township he loved in many ways, coaching sports, volunteering at the Wanamassa Fire Dept. and holding several town ship elected offices including 25 years as a Councilman and Mayor.
Jimmy, as friends called him, was an incredibly devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who touched and blessed so many lives. An avid outdoorsman he loved hunting, fishing, boating and golf, he was usually found with a fishing rod in one hand and a cold beer in the other somewhere on a boat or the beach with his loved ones.
Mr. Garrity is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra Garrity of Stuart, FL; His sister Nancy Lillie of Wanamassa, NJ, son, James R. Garrity Jr. of Palm City, FL, and son, Douglas Garrity and his wife Jenna of Stuart, FL; grandchildren, Brittany, James, Jared, Madelyn, and Madison.
