Lorne Alexander Drynan

On December 19th, 2020, Lorne passed away peacefully in his 90th year. From his childhood in a tightknit family with five boys living in Mirror, Alberta during the great depression, to the independent young man who embarked on a power lineman career before age twenty, Lorne epitomized his strong family values and need for service to the community.

He will be greatly missed by his seven children, Terry (Darrell) Hunt, Lorna (Garth) Garratt, Greg (Elaine) Drynan, Tammie (David) Vanderwolf, Darcy (Karen) Drynan, Darryl (Kelly) Drynan, Jody (Bruce) Hohnstein; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two brothers Gilbert and Lincoln Drynan.

Lorne was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine; his parents, Gordon and Minnie; and three brothers, Gordie, Jim and Aubrey.

Lorne’s life was hallmarked by his physical skills and his generous nature. From construction projects to rescuing a cat from the top of a power pole, he could always be found helping someone in need or extending the hand of friendship to someone he had just met. Lorne was known for his honesty, integrity and willingness to donate his time. From serving on the Camrose School Board, serving as the head of the Hay Lakes Volunteer Fire Department, to serving on the Mayerthorpe Hospital Board, he contributed greatly to his community. As a father he was known by his children as a guy who could procure anything at a moment’s notice. As a result, classroom Christmas trees were always delivered to the school and he built sandboxes and playgrounds in many locations. Lorne was proud of his service with the RCMP as an auxiliary constable, including being assigned to work the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988. This RCMP association produced some of the most enduring friendships of his life.

As one of the longest serving employees with Transalta Utilities (Calgary Power), Lorne capped off his career, like most Albertans, by retiring to an island in the Pacific (Vancouver Island). He hand built a new home (his fourth), and then proceeded to win awards for his woodcarving.

Eventually the need to be close to family brought Lorne back to Alberta and he liked nothing more than a crowd of family and friends visiting him. Coffee and doughnuts or milkshakes and chocolate were always welcomed. Lorne’s good humor and camaraderie ingratiated him to the caring staff at the Stony Plain Good Samaritan Care Centre. The family wishes to acknowledge the extraordinary care provided by Jenica and Amber who made the Centre his home.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private family service will take place on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., with live-streaming available through www.parklandfuneralservices.com . A Celebration of Lorne’s life will be announced when COVID restrictions allow.

In lieu of other tributes donations may be made may be made to Good Samaritan Care Centre (4800 55 Avenue, Stony Plain, AB. T7Z 1B4).

We are grateful for the wonderful memories and that his spirit and character live on in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
