Jim was born in Battle River, Alberta in 1943 to Katherine and Joseph Kennedy. He was raised in the area, and met and married Dorothy Carole Reesik in Manning, Alberta in 1964. Their daughter Darlene was born in Manning in 1965, and soon after, they moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta where Jim began a long, successful career in the oilsands. Their second daughter Donna was born in Fort McMurray in 1967.
Aside from his dedication to his work in mining, he very much enjoyed spending his free time with family and friends; fishing, stock car races, camping, hobby farming, woodworking and volunteering with the Noralta Figure Skating Club, along with many other outdoor activities.
When it came time to retire from Syncrude Canada Ltd., Jim and Dorothy fulfilled a lifelong dream and bought a farm just outside of Thorhild, Alberta. There, they raised their herd of cattle, and welcomed the many friends and family who came to visit and enjoy the farm. It was in the mid 90’s when his two granddaughters were born, and he enjoyed spoiling them both.
They eventually sold the farm and moved to an acreage in Anzac, Alberta, and enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family again. They would later settle permanently in Vegreville, Alberta, and were very active in the community there.
In October 2023, he was devastated by the passing of his wife and best friend, Dorothy. He never recovered from the loss of his love of 60 years and couldn’t adjust to life without her. After suffering a debilitating stroke, he passed away peacefully in his sleep and went to join his wife.
Jim asked that there be no service, and was cremated on May 19, 2024, according to his wishes.
Rest in eternal peace, Dad.
