She lived just outside Quebec City, in the community of Loretteville, surrounded by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and both Grandmothers until the age of three when they moved to Prescott, Ontario, where she spent the next 15 years. The family also had a cottage on upper Lake Rideau, near Westport, where she spent almost all her summers swimming, boating, and helping mind her younger siblings. Mid-point in her final year of high school, her father got a transfer to the new CIL plant they had just completed south of Sarnia, Ontario. In January 1967, her father bought a house in Corunna, Ontario, about seven houses down the road from where I lived, and that was the luckiest day of my life. It truly was "love at first sight"! I had just turned 17, and Danielle was the "older woman", having just turned 18. Without hesitation I asked her for a date; she accepted; one became two, two became ten and then on April 01 (Fools Day), I asked her to accept a pearl ring and "go steady" (a term that probably doesn't exist anymore). From January to June she finished her high school and graduated from St. Pat's, a Catholic school, where the girls had to wear white blouses with tartan colored vests, pleated skirts and knee high stockings. In my eyes, you couldn't have painted a prettier picture.
For the next two years she took a job at a glass wear factory, pretty mundane assembly line work, but she never complained, and never missed a day.
Danielle was married June 7, 1969 at St Joseph's Church in Corunna, Ontario and she became Danielle Flett. Shortly after that, the couple moved from Corunna to Tillsonburg in early 1970, where she gave birth to three fine sons: Lee on November 2, 1970, Neal on August 1, 1972 and Robert (Robi) December 30, 1975.
In July 1977, Danielle and the family moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta. As the three boys grew, Danielle found time to take upgrading courses and once Robi began full days at school in 1980, Danielle became a Teacher Aide at Good Shepherd School and continued on for almost 15 more years. She loved it! Danielle was also very gifted, with an eye for decorating, so many nights she either attended or taught various classes in floral arrangements, paper tole and decorating.
In 1990 while still living in Fort McMurray, they bought an RV camp ground in Oliver, BC, which meant that from September to June she worked at the school and in July and August she worked the camp ground. She never shied away from the hard work and always contributed more than her share. By the year 2000, the house was empty. The kids had all grown and moved on with their own lives, so Danielle moved to Spruce Grove, into a new custom built house, backing onto the golf course. That house was sold in 2003 and she moved to Okanagan Falls where she continued to spend the summers. Danielle found the winters too gloomy in the Okanagan, so returned to Stony Plain to create tha “anchor” as Albertans. Shortly after that, we started travelling to southern California for a few months each winter and eventually bought a house at ‘The Fountain Of Youth Spa & RV Resort’, which is situated about half way between Palm Springs and El Centro, where Danielle spent a total of 16 glorious winters.
On December 21, 2015 the world turned upside down. While in California, Danielle had been having pains in her lower abdomen, so went to a small hospital in the nearest community of Brawley, which also happened to be the regional Cancer Center. After just a few short tests, they diagnosed Danielle as having third stage Ovarian Cancer. We left California the very next day and she was check into the U of A Hospital in Edmonton, on the 24 of December. Over the next four years Danielle endured three chemotherapy trials, two radiation trials and has had four invasive operations. She never gave up, she could hide her pain with the best of them, never wanting to be the center of attention. Her laugh was frequent and contagious. She defied the expectations and battled on, continuing her life’s routines as long as possible. She remained independent and in her own home to the last day. Sadly, Cancer finally won the battle. In the early evening of June 4th, an intestinal tumor ruptured, resulting in internal bleeding and Danielle was transported to Westview Hospital. There she made the conscious decision to decline further invasive treatments. She passed away June 5th, at 3:35 am, two days before her 51st Wedding Anniversary, in dignity, serenity, and in the arms of the boy/man/husband who loved her with all his being. Unintentionally the pain has transferred. Her absence will be mourned by many.
She has been greeted at the door to Heaven by her youngest son Robi, who had passed away six years before, after an unsuccessful heart and lung transplant.
She is survived by her husband Bob, son Lee Flett (Verlayne, Liam & Nathan), son Neal Flett (Kathy, Cody & Cory), sisters Diane Albert and Lynn Brewin, brothers Mike and Marc, nieces, nephews and many extended family members.
