Maria de Socorro Diaz Nunes was born November 6, 1933 in Santa Cruz, Durango Mexico and was one of 12 children. Daughter of Ricardo Diaz and Julia Nunez her story begins in the small town of San Miguel del Cantil Durango. Maria unfortunately lost her parents at the young age of 12. The loss of her parents instilled a sense of independence, strength and love for family that resonated throughout her life. At the age of 16, she decided to pack up and move to Tijuana where she met her first husband Seferino Cortez-Perez with whom she had 9 beautiful children. Maria had 6 boys and 3 girls: Jose Luis, Ricardo, Jorge Alberto, Seferino, Raul, Maria Cruz, Cristina, Armando and Iliana Elizabeth. Maria was also endearingly known as Socorrito, Mari, Mama and Mami by her kids.
Socorro was an incredibly loving mother. She understood the uniquely different way each of her children expressed and received love. In her heart and eyes there was no such thing as favoritism. That same sentiment extended to her many grandkids. Regardless of the situation, Socorro would always put her kids before herself. Her life was her family. She endured and triumphed through many of life's challenges and tribulations that many never experience. Socorro was truly a warrior and fought bravely through and through. She left this world in peace and surrounded by love.
Socorro will be missed. Her strong spirit and will lives on. She lives on in her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all those who have been touched by the love, strength, conviction, wisdom and beauty of her soul.
