Betty Lou McDaniel Wright passed away late Thursday May 3rd at age 87. Betty was born August 6, 1930 near Irwinville, GA to Joel Wilburn and Mary Renew McDaniel. Raised in and working in the farming community during tough financial times she completed community college before moving to Atlanta with an Aunt and several cousins with eventually all of her siblings following. She continued to live and make her life in the Atlanta, Decatur and Snellville areas. In January 2016 she and Jamie moved to the Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett Assisted Living. Her significant Church affiliations were Big Creek Baptist Church, Kirkwood Presbyterian Church and since the early 60’s she was an active member and supporter of Mount Carmel Christian Church including being a youth leader during the Big Red Barn years, a member of the Friendship Sunday School class and more recently a part of the volunteer kitchen staff for Wednesday night dinners and other special events. Her interests were her 3 boys and extended family, square dancing through the 70’s and all things Georgia Tech especially traveling with the Garners to football stadiums across the south. Some of her favorite times were spent at Glenwood Hills and Exchange Park baseball fields supporting the boys and the recurring cousin’s parties where many of her family from South Georgia could gather and renew their ties. She was proud that all 3 boys and all 6 grandchildren became college graduates.
She liked to remark that her father would never have believed the changes in the world since the dirt floor house they live in at her birth. One thing she knew he would marvel at was malfunction junction with the multi layered bridges. Considering a good bit of his life was spent on tractors and tobacco harvesters we are sure she was right. But she also like to comment on how little the Ponce De Leon had changed from Decatur to what Moreland with it being essentially the same since she arrived.
Betty is survived by her husband of over 66 years, Jamie, her 3 sons Jimmy(Susan), Joey(Elaine) and Danny, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, her sister Carolyn McDaniel Free and sister in law Cathy McDaniel, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Albert and Doyle McDaniel.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Saturday June 16 at Mount Carmel Christian Church in Stone Mountain. Family will receive friends starting at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers we request donations to Mount Carmel Cristian Church or Christian City Union, GA.
The family wants to thank all of Betty’s many friends through the years for their love and caring. In particular we thank the folks at Mount Carmel through the years that meant so much to her to the end of her life.
Thanks also to the Delmar family for the care offered and the times shared there.
And thank you Mom/Bim for all of your love and support - Jamie, Jimmy, Joey, Danny, Susan, Elaine, Carmen, Jamie, Allison, Ansley, Harrison, Kate, Makenna, Eli, Carter, Banks and Piper.]
