James is survived by his wife of 48 years, Penny Danko (nee Ritter.) He is also survived by his children; James R. (Aleksa) and Jennifer (Eric) Danko Fenske; his grandchildren Ethan, Elias and Sage Danko; his brother Thomas (Marylyn) Danko; nephew Mike (Shannon) Danko; and mother-in-law Mary Ritter. He will be remembered by countless other family and friends.
A beloved teacher and coach, James touched the lives of many students and athletes at Nazareth Academy during his 35-year career. He led the tennis and golf teams to success over numerous seasons. In 2015, James was inducted into the Nazareth Academy’s Athletic Hall of Fame, honoring his tenure and heart.
James’ sense of hard work and humility guided him through life. He pitched collegiate baseball at Lewis University, where he also earned his Bachelor’s degree. After playing semi-pro ball with the Macomb Macs, he dedicated his life to teaching and coaching. James went on to get his Master’s degree in education at Concordia University. He also worked as an ASA official and basketball referee for more than four decades.
A visitation for James will be held Thursday, January 20, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mount Auburn Funeral Home, 4101 South Oak Park Ave, Stickney, IL 60402. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 21, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Leonard's Catholic Church, 3318 Clarence Ave, Berwyn, IL 60802. Masks must be worn at all times during both. A memorial will be held at Nazareth Academy at a later date.
