David was born in Forestville, PA in 1932 to George Lloyd and Anna Louise Shields. He enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War, and then returned to Grove City College where he met the love of his life Carolyn on a blind date. They married in 1956 and were blessed with a 65 year marriage and three children. David lived a number of places but spent the majority of his adult life in Quakertown, PA where he was active in church, local government and the American Legion. He had a strong work ethic, deep faith, keen sense of humor, innovative use of the English language, and a ready laugh. He was a leader and role model to all in his family.
David was predeceased by his parents and brother Dick Shields. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, children Susan (Mike) Fedoryshyn, Mark (Maureen) Shields, Ann (Jim) Rigdon, brother Jim (Nellie) Shields, sisters Grace Eileen Rotnour and Linda Frampton, grandchildren Kaela (Patrick) Baird, Tyler (Viv) Shields, Michelle (Eric) Smolarek, and great grandchildren Declan, Rhys and Cora Maeve Baird, and many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held in Harrisville, PA. There will be no public viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
Memorials in his memory may be given to the USO or the Salvation Army.
