She graduated as valedictorian from the Nakina High School class of 1960. On November 4, 1962, she married the love of her life, William Seth Martin, and moved to Winston-Salem. After a few years of
marriage, they moved permanently to Statesville.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Vernon Jacobs, of Savannah, Georgia; Dewey, Dupree, and Lindbergh Jacobs, of Tabor City, North Carolina; and her three sisters, LeaRue Gaskins, Ponnell Evans, and Fostine Long, of Columbus County.
Mary was a kind, thoughtful, caring wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother who was actively involved in the lives of her family. She was also a dedicated employee of BB&T for almost 30 years and always enjoyed helping people.
After her retirement, she worked diligently in her flower and vegetable gardens and loved sharing her plants with others. She also spent many hours shopping at Goodwill with friends and meeting new people. In addition, Mary was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church for over 50 years. She cherished her church family and actively participated in many projects within the community.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Cindy Holcomb (David) and Renee Shaver, both of Olin; two granddaughters, Jessica Bunton and Sabrina Shaver; one grandson by birth, Jake Shaver; and another grandson by marriage, Ethan Bunton. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews
that were devoted to their "Aunt Mary Jane".
The family will receive friends on Monday, September 2nd, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. A service to celebrate Mary's life will be held at Fairview Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 3rd, at 11:00 a.m. Dr. Scott Eanes will officiate. Burial will immediately follow in the church
cemetery.
Pallbearers will include Jimmy Evans, Bradley Holland, Dale Martin, Kyle Martin, Randy Martin, and Dr. Kenny Miller. Honorary pallbearers will consist of the members of the Abundant Life Sunday School Class at Fairview Baptist Church.
