Longtime English Literature professor at CSI
In loving memory of Richard Currie, it's with a heavy heart we announce his passing on April 16th 2020 of Covid-19. Richard Alan Currie was born in Brooklyn, NY on December 15th, 1941. He lived in four of the five boroughs, but spent the last 20 years in Rosebank at Sea Cliff Towers Co-op. He enjoyed his retirement years there and was very fond of the friends and neighbors he met there.
Retired after 40 years, as a full professor of English Literature at the College of Staten Island, he was known for his love of Victorian novels, especially Charles Dickens. His recent classes for The Center for Lifelong Development at the Jewish Community Center focused on Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters.
Modest and unassuming, he was also known in the community for his dedication to education, social justice and intellectual curiosity. His caring manner endeared him to students and colleagues alike, who held him in their highest regard and admiration.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Staten Island invites you to a virtual memorial service honoring the life and legacy of Richard. The service will be held on Zoom on Tuesday, May 12th at 1 pm. For additional information regarding the service, contact our minister at [email protected].
Richard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Margaret, his brother, Douglas Currie and his sisters-in-law Cindy and Patricia Kiley. He is also survived by his nephew, Jerry Currie and his wife, Brett, as well as his nephew, Chris Currie, and his niece, Debbie and her husband, Dave Tross and their children, Allison, Megan and Lucas as well as Jerry's children, Jenna and Noah.A retired professor of English at the College of Staten Island, Richard was known for his love of Victorian novels, especially Dickens, and for his supportive and respectful attention to his students and colleagues.
We invite all of Richard's friends and family to join us for this service. Please note, all users will be muted throughout the service to ensure everyone can hear the speakers.
