STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Lifelong Midland Beach resident Margaret (Giddle) Mooney, 87, who was devoted to her family and renowned for her dancing, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince’s Bay.
She was born Margaret Loretta Bellach and graduated from New Dorp High School.
Mrs. Mooney was an accomplished dancer and she and her husband, John Sr., won many awards for dancing the Peabody and the fox trot in competitions during their younger years.
After raising her family, she worked as a nurse’s aide at Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville, from 1974 to 1986.
“She was a loving and wonderful mother and grandmother and was especially devoted to her son, Stephen, who is autistic,” her family said. “She loved cooking and spending time with all of us.”
Mrs. Mooney was also an avid New York Yankees fan.
She was a parishioner of St. Margaret Mary R.C. Church, Midland Beach.
John Sr., her husband of 53 years, died in 1995 on April 29, the same day of the month as her death. Her son, Johnny Jr., died in 1944.
Surviving are her sons, Dennis, Stephen and John; her daughters, Sharon DeGeorge, Corinne Edwards, Susan Ballantine, Deborah Mooney and Kathleen Bisignano; a sister, Dorothy Pentangelo; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
