Josephine Theresa Smith (nee Chambers), known to family and friends as “Jo”, a longtime resident of Eltingville, Staten Island, departed this life into eternal rest surrounded by her family on Friday, September 1st, 2023. She was 85 years young. Daughter of the late Willie and Mae Chambers, Jo was born on August 7th, 1938, in Manhattan, NY.
Josephine married the love of her life, James Smith, on July 30th, 1960, Bronx NY. They relocated to Staten Island six years later to raise their family.
She was employed by the Public Health Hospital as an administrator. When the facility was closed, she went to work for the United States Postal Service. After years of service, she decided to go onto her next part of life-retirement. Jo was a caring, funny, feisty, loving, women who enjoyed crocheting, video games, puzzles, trips to Atlantic City and traveling.
Josephine will be laid to rest with her late husband Jim who left us November, 2006. Josephine is survived by her two sons; James and his wife Catherine, William and his wife Carla, her former daughter-in-law Christine Smith, her sister Mary Wicenski. Her grandchildren; Kristyn and her husband Anthony Esposito, James and his wife Danielle Smith, Sean and his wife Rachel Smith, Connor Smith, Ryan Smith and Jessica Delarosa. Her cherished great-grandchildren, Mason, Charlotte, and Valerie. As well as loving nieces, nephews, cousins and her dear family friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jo was predeceased by her brothers-in-law; John Wicenski, Robert Smith, Jack Hall; sisters-in- law; Mary Smith, Patricia Hall.
Family and friends will gather on Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 3pm-7pm at the Casey, McCallum, Rice, South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Ave, Staten Island, NY. A funeral mass will be held Friday, September 8, 2023, at 12:30 pm at The Church of St. Clare, 110 Nelson Ave, Staten Island, NY. A burial will follow at The Cemetery of the Resurrection, 361 Sharrott Ave, Staten Island, NY.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, and the staff of Hudson Valley Hospice for their sincere compassion while caring for Josephine and the support given to our family during this difficult time.
