1936-2021
Beloved Father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, John J. Woods of New Brighton passed away at home on Saturday December 25, 2021 at the age of 85. John was born on April 11, 1936 in the Highbridge section of the Bronx to John and Nora Woods. He attended Sacred Heart School (Bronx) and then Cardinal Hayes High School class of 1953. He earned a B.S. in Engineering Science from Richmond College and completed graduate studies at Polytech Institute. He was in the 69th regiment NY National Guard (Fighting Irish) and was a US Army veteran stationed in Germany as a specialist 3rd class.
John started his career at Phelps Dodge Copper products Corporation in the mail room eventually advancing to the research laboratory. He would then join General Cable as an electronics technician where he would spend almost 30 years retiring as an electrical engineer and the manager of the International Division. While at General Cable, John traveled the US and the world on business visiting multiple countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America.
John was a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) and served as the past President and financial Secretary. One of his proudest moments with the AOH was being the Grand Marshall for the St Patricks Day Parade in 2016 marching down Forest Avenue in his home community. He was also the past Grand Knight of the Richmond Council Knights of Columbus (K of C) and a 4th degree member of the Gov. Dongan Assembly. John was a life member of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1934 and the Veterans Corp of the 69th regiment. He served in the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Parish and was an officer of the Sacred Heart Youth Activities Council.
John was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Margaret Woods, nee Dunne and his sons Michael and Dennis. He is survived by a brother Edmund Woods (Linda). His surviving children are Pamela Innocenti (Frank), Kevin Woods (Collette), Catherine Woods, and Daniel Woods. John adored his eight Grandchildren, Frankie Innocenti, Sean Woods, Emily Woods, Anthony Woods, Ryan Woods, Alexis Woods, Aidan Woods, and Dylan Woods. A celebration of John’s life will be held at Harmon Funeral Home on Thursday, December 30, from 2-4 and 7-9. A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday December 31st, at 10:15am at Sacred Heart R.C. Church with the burial to follow at St. Peters Cemetery.
