John Bruno

John Bruno, of Punta Gorda, Florida and Tom's River, New Jersey passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, March 5, 2023, surrounded by his adoring and heartbroken family. He was days shy of his 83rd birthday.

Born in Queens, NY, John came to Staten Island as a toddler with his parents, John and Laura (Cuccia) Bruno. They settled in Port Richmond, where John attended the PS 20 program for intellectually gifted children, and Port Richmond High School, where he graduated in 1957. He was an active alum, organizing class reunions for many years. A true original, friends and family characterize John as a uniquely special, genuinely good man whose heart and intentions were as authentic as the smile on his face. He was kind, respectful and committed to helping anyone at any time.

John's life was built on a foundation of honor and service - to his family, friends, country and community. From 1957 to 1960 he served in the US Army as an MP stationed in Japan. He received commendations for good conduct and expert marksmanship. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to Staten Island, where he married his beautiful wife, Ali Albanese, joined the FDNY and served for 31 years. He was a proud and active member of the Staten Island Chapter of the FDNY Retirees Organization, the American Legion, Elks of Punta Gorda and is a sponsor of St Roch's Church in Staten Island, where he lived for 80 years of his life.

John's devotion to his family knew no boundaries, and his grandchildren adored their "Pazy". He has attended hundreds of the kids sporting events, often acting as chauffeur for his granddaughter's tennis team in a van outfitted with TVs and video games, fondly referred to as "The Pazmobile". He could be seen week after week on the sidelines, cheering loudly and offering encouragement. He taught his grandchildren how to swim, helped them learn to ride their bicycles, and often rigged up game nets or pool relays in the yard. John went hunting and fishing with his son, Robert, vacationed with his daughters, Maria and Nicole, and taught them how to spackle and use a drill. John and Ali Bruno would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in May.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his daughter, Maria Campitiello Good and her husband, Lloyd, his son, Robert Bruno and his fiance, Kim Corino; his daughter, Nicole Sorrentino and her husband Joseph, and grandchildren Allison Campitiello, Justine DeMario and her husband, Christopher, Gabrielle Campitiello, Matthew Campitiello, Sophia Sorrentino, Camille Bruno, Olivia Sorrentino, his latest pride and joy, great granddaughter Cecilia Grace DeMario, and two step-grandchildren, Matthew Good and his wife Jaclyn, and Lauren Good.

SERVICES

The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10, 2023, at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10314. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 10 a.m. at St. Roch’s Church, 602 Port Richmond Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10302. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
