I am looking at his photo from my 1968 yearbook from LaSalle Academy. He was the best teacher I had in the 4 years. I remember him taking a bunch of us to his apartment  uptown I believe on 77th St.  He was a gentle and kind man at his young age of 25. May God Bless him always,


I was a student at St Peters Boys High School. Mr Lamb not only taught me but my uncle in Spanish. He was a fantastic person as well as a teacher. He will be missed. My condolences go ou to you your family. James Lamb RIP.

December 14, 16.  Just heard about Jims passing. Sky and I only met Jim once in April 04 during a visit with my cousin Lois. Meeting and getting to know  Jim and meeting their three sons for dinner one nite in a NY restaurant. Jim was a very warm and welcoming gentleman. Knowing Jim was like making a friend for life a fine man, host and welcomed us in his home. We want to express our sympathy to Lois and family,  Keeping the lamb family in our thoughts and prayers. God bless

The one thing that sticks out in my memory of Jim was that he played Santa Claus for all the younger students at Holy Child when we gave out boxes of candy. My deepest sympathy to Lois and the rest of his family. May he rest in peace.

I was saddened when a friend who was also a student of Mr. Lamb sent this to me. He was all and more as described. An influence in many lives. He is teaching Spanish now to the God's. God bless him and all he leaves behind.

I was a student at Brooklyn Tech, class of 2001. I never got lucky to have Mr. Lamb as my Spanish teacher. But I was lucky to have met him and acquainted with him in his office, at the Languages Department. I cannot recall the exact reason I was even there, or why we started conversing. Mr. Lamb asked me where I was from, how long I had lived in the US and etc. And our conversation took off from there and then on to discussing cultures, literature and of course classical music and the opera. I ended up working at his office during my lunch hour.  

Years later after graduating, I had come back to visit Brooklyn Tech. I visited Mr. Lamb. He was the only one I had visited. He was the sole reason I had even visited Brooklyn Tech at all. 

In 2015, Mr. Lamb found my cell phone number and left me a voicemail, trying to verify whether I was in fact Igor Faynshteyn from Brooklyn Tech. I returned his call, but he was unable to talk at the time. He then returned my call a few days later, and I was unable to pick up and talk. He left me a voicemail saying he'd call me back. Unfortunately, we never got in touch again. And it is with deepest sadness that I found out today, March. 26, that James Lamb passed away just 3 weeks ago. His two voicemails that he left me are the only ones on my phone that I still didn't delete. 

James has always been a saint to me. He was and always will be one of the finest men I have ever met. Always pleasant, polite and genuine, Mr. Lamb had a knack for starting conversations with anyone, and about anything. And I, for one, had always come away having learned something; and even more importantly, feeling happier, because conversing with Mr. Lamb was always truly a joy.  

My failure to return his last call will weigh very heavily on me for a long, long time. 

I met Mr. Lamb around 1998, but I will always remember him as my friend, James.

Jim Lamb became part of our family when he married my cousin Lois nearly 40 years ago. She has always been a firecracker in the very best way, loaded with energy, passion for those she loves and for the arts, particularly music and painting, sharp wit, and vivid opinions, all backed by a keen intellect. Before meeting Jim at their wedding rehearsal, I couldn't imagine who the man might be who could do her justice as a husband. Jim was the one. Spending time with them at home was an immersion in life lived deeply and fully. The light in this world is diminished with Jim's passing. Lois, Paul, Charles, and Sasha and his family all have my deepest condolences.

I met Jim in the subway tunnels under the new Met in 1966.  He asked to share the blanket I and Jean Weber were sharing in the cold.  What a beginning to a friendship!  He always called me Leetsee after hearing Tebaldi and Tina say my name, Lizzy, in their English.  I'll always remember him smiling especially after a performance we attended at the MET and I was greeted by "E' sempre Laura."  Rest in peace, my friend.  Leetsee

Jim was an amazing ray of sunshine. We met sitting near other at Opera Orchestra of New York 15 or so years ago and we immediately recognized in each other the spark of genuine enthusiasm for great singing and operatic artistry. Jim knew it when he heard it and his discriminating assessment of singers and vocal interpretation were among the finest I ever encountered in a laymen. He knew what he liked, he knew when it was great, and he was there, whenever he could be, to cheer on and share that greatness with others.  

We become friends over the years and Jim always shared generously his knowledge, enthusiasm and his extraordinary collection of vocal performances. He catalogued them all in a tome he called "la mia lista" and it was the size of a small book. He would gladly share the list with anyone who was interested. It was an amazing collection and represents the best in opera over half a century or more. 

Barbara and I spent one extraordinary day with our opera friends at his and Lois' home. Everything about that day was special and memorable. A snow-storm threatening, a gathering of dear and like-minded friends and good food, drink, exceptional recordings and the convivial company of wonderful friends. 

It is memory we will always cherish.

I met Jim, whom I lovingly called 'Jaimala,' on Lincoln  Center Plaza in 1969 when we each were buying tix for the first week of performances. So musically knowledgeable and talented! So witty and so handsome and so very very loving! He regalled all us Standees with opera anecdotes and personal experiences. He was himself a gifted musician: he could play piano and harpsichord and also the oboe which I believe he taught himself. And he was a hilarious mimick, notably of Tebaldi in her portrayal of La Giaconda. (Who of us can ever forget his inimitable rendition of ' e sempre Laura!'?!)
     I was all set to go to NYC just a couple of weeks before Paul called me with the devastating news; so looking forward to seeing Jim and Lois [whom he playfully called his 'Wee Wifey';] to listening to some recordings with them and convulsing together at Hippolito Lazaro's vocal gasp on a recording [Tosca?] that Jim always played when I visited. Maybe even enjoying an episode of 'Downton Abbey' together. 
     It grieves me beyond what words can convey that I didn't make that trip--and that I will never hear or see my Jaimela again.


 As a student of this wonderful man I was blessed. Seeing him intermittently through the years, we would engage in lively conversation. Jaime Cordero was truly a loving person who always had an encouraging word for me. As a police officer I responded to a call near his home in the '90s& he was effusive in his praise for my "CPR". I can truly say, "I learned from the best!" Condolences to his family.

My mind continues to be flooded with memories of Lamb, my cherished friend of nearly sixty years.  They're all good, warm memories, without exception.  He was a delight, a truly fine person.  My heart reaches out to Lois, the light of his life, and to his three "amazing offspring(s)" as he called them in his messages.   A crushingly sad loss.  Requiescat in pace, Lamb. (Had to use a second language here, to make him smile.)

Jim taught with my dad at La Salle Academy and often told fond stories of their teaching experiences at La Salle. My wife and I got to know Jim through the PS 16 PTA. When our children all graduated I got to know Jim even better seeing him at St. Peter's Church each Sunday.  We will miss him.

  How do you describe a teacher that was so much more than that. I was one of those fortunate ST Peters students in the late 70s to have taken a Spanish class from Mr Lamb as we knew him.  We knew he was very interested in the Holocaust.  So we then, like a lot of high school kids would divert his attention to speaking about this particular subject.  Those conversations were priceless.  I even today have a rich appreciation for the plight of the people that suffered that terrible injustice.  I owe all of that to one man, Mr Lamb. I can't speak a lick of Spanish, but there are far more important lessons in life, one of which i had the privilege of getting in his class. My sincere condolences to his family.

I first met Jim when we both taught at St. Peter's Boys' High School.  He was so much fun to be with.  So very funny.  We became great friends.  In recent years, I regret that we did not see each other as often as we had planned to, but when we did, there would be laughs and great stories.  We would pick-up as if we had seen each other only the day before.  Jim  was that kind of lifelong friend.
I am so very sorry that Jim is gone.  My deepest condolences go out to his beloved Lois and the boys.

Janet & I are shocked to hear of his passing. Only a week and a half ago we enjoyed together a performance by Voyces, the ancient music vocal ensemble he and Lois supported. Jolly as ever, he shared conversation about our common passion - music. Always a pleasant surprise running into him and Lois in our travels. He was  warm-hearted jovial and shall be missed.

Such sad news! Whenever my daughters would complain about their French class I would always hit them with a Mr. Lamb story from my 2 years of Spanish with him at St. Peter's (class of 85). Always brought a smile to my face. Strangely enough I thought of him just last week for no reason. Now I know why. Rest in peace Jaime!

I never had Mr. Lamb as a teacher, but we did have nice conversations while I was a student @ St.Peter's.  Coincidently, my mother taught one of his sons in Pre-School.  I found out that he was at the 30th reunion party. Unfortunately, i couldn't make that reunion. May he rest in peace and I'm sure he's enjoying opera songs sung by Pavarotti in heaven. It is terribly sad news to learn of Jim's passing. As a neighbor for the last decade, I enjoyed our conversations on the sidewalk or across our respective porches. He was a kind, considerate, and witty person, and one who obviously loved his wife and sons a great deal. The neighborhood will not be the same without him. My condolences to his family.

A great guy and talented teacher. He was my St Peters HS Spanish teacher. I had lots of fun in his class. He kicked me out of class one day for being disruptive but soon welcomed me back with no judgment, only encouragement. I will always think well of him and smile.

I was truly saddened and very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I met Jim and Lois when their son Sasha, became engaged to my granddaughter, Teresa. Over the years, I came to know Jim and Lois as friends that I loved and admired. I was born in Italy, many years ago, and at family events, Jim would always speak with me in Italian, which I enjoyed. Jim was a kind and wonderful person. I will truly miss him.

We knew each other only casually as colleagues at Brooklyn Tech.  But the lasting image I have is of a gentleman and a gentle man.

We have all lost a large touch of class and extraordinary humor. James shall be missed forever by all of us who were so lucky to know him.

We were deeply saddened on hearing of Jim's passing. As Jim's in-laws, we have known and loved Jim, Lois, Sasha, Charles and Paul for nearly twenty years. Becoming a part of the Lamb family was a highlight in our lives. 
Jim was one of the warmest, caring, sensitive, charming, wittiest and loving gentleman one could ever be fortunate enough to meet, and call him a friend. We were so very fortunate to have been a part of Jim's life. 
Jim's passing is a tremendous loss for the Lamb family and all who knew him. We know that all will take strength in their loving memories of Jim.

James was my Spanish teacher in the early 70s. He was an extraordinarily gifted teacher and his life-lessons extended far beyond the text book and planned curriculum.
Many decades later I saw him on the SI Ferry and approached him to say hello. He remembered be instantly but was surprised that I remembered him at all. I let him know how grateful I was to him and the influence and impact he made in my life. I don't think he fully appreciated just how much he had given to others. I miss him so. We have lost a great man.

He is fondly remembered by his students at St. Peter's for his humor and his ability to keep things interesting. Rest in Peace, Mr. Lamb.

I was blessed to have Mr. Lamb as my Spanish teacher at St. Peter's Boys HS in the early-1970s. I always struggled with Spanish, but Mr. Lamb made the class fun as he had a great sense of humor. My condolences to his family.

I am proud to say that I had Mr. Lamb as a teacher at St.Peter's Boy's High School in the early 80's. He was great guy and always smiled.

Mr. Lamb was that one 'special' teacher you often hear people speak of that really made a difference in my life. He taught gave me my love of classical music which I carry with me to this day.  Thank you sir.

Jim Lamb was in my life since l956, when we were students at LaSalle High School in Philadelphia.  His wit, his charm, his sensitive and forgiving nature, and his love of music and  Opera will be deeply missed.  His and Lois' reviews of what to see and what NOT to see (I knew so little!), will not be forgotten. I learned! I always felt that "Lamb" was just a ferry ride away.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Jim's passing. I had sat directly behind him at the Met about two weeks earlier, and we chatted as usual. He was full of enough kindness for at least 10 people and knowing him most certainly enriched my life for the past 50 years. Posa in pace amico mio.

I met Jim and Lois in 2005 or so when we sat near each other in Carnegie Hall for OONY concerts and we became friends.  Over the last ten years we've shared many wonderful events including lots of opera performances and some memorable recitals including many   local recitals involving young and upcoming singers. He was a passionate, generous and gentle man who gave joy to everyone he encountered and he will be sorely missed. My love to Lois and to his family.

I knew Jim for 50 years as a fellow opera-lover. He was always warm ,kind and generous. More recently, I was grateful for the support that he and Lois gave to young singers.
Truly saddened by his passing, but good memories will remain.


Jim was in grade school with my brother, John, my sister, Mary, and me at Holy Child parish school in Philadelphia in the 1950s.  We didn't know each other then (we were in different grades), but years later I saw him with a group of mutual friends at a Julliard Opera presentation of Massenet's opera Cendrillon starring Julia Bullock. Memory and recognition sparked that afternoon in the spring of 2014 and Jim and I had a delightful time reminiscing about our parallel tracks as music and opera lovers. Over the many months since I would see and share with Jim and his wife, Lois, at numerous performances and concerts. I am saddened I won't be hearing him share his vast experience, knowledge and vivid opinions in the future -- but I do have the memories.  Sincere condolences to Lois and all Jim Lamb's family.
