Dolores Whelan, a pillar of love and strength in her family, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on Staten Island to Andrew Tomestic and Sophie Borowski, Dolores's life was a testament to the enduring bonds of family and community.
Dolores shared 66 beautiful years of marriage with her beloved husband, Eugene Whelan, until his passing in 2017. Together, they weathered life's joys and challenges, creating a legacy of love and devotion that will endure for generations to come.
As a mother, Dolores poured her heart and soul into nurturing her children: Sharon, Bill (Laura), Gene (Susan, deceased), Michael (Susan), Kathleen (Benny), Sean (Ann), and Coleen (Marty). Though her infant son Eugene preceded her in death, his memory remained cherished in her heart.
Dolores was the loving matriarch of a large and vibrant family, surviving by 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Her home was always filled with laughter, warmth, and creating countless cherished memories with her loved ones.
After dedicating herself to raising her children, Dolores embarked on a fulfilling career with the NYC Board of Education, where she worked diligently for 20 years. Her commitment to education mirrored her dedication to her family, and she touched the lives of many with her kindness and compassion.
In her leisure time, Dolores found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved nothing more than a day spent shopping, basking in the sun at the beach, or creating beautiful crochet pieces with her nimble fingers. Yet, her greatest joy came from spending time with her beloved family, whose love and laughter brought light to her life.
A visitation to honor Dolores's life will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, located at 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2024, from 9:45 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Clare's Church, 110 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10308.
Dolores Whelan will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a beacon of love, strength, and unwavering devotion. May she rest in eternal peace.
