Christopher A Cumberbatch

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Christopher A. Cumberbatch, 31, of New Brighton, a city sanitation worker who was kind and loved by all who knew him, died Monday in Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, N.Y., due to complications from pneumonia.

Mr. Cumberbatch was born in Queens. He moved with his family to New Brighton as a child.

A graduate of Curtis High School, and attended the College of Staten Island, Willowbrook.

Mr. Cumberbatch worked for the city department of sanitation for five years. Prior to that, he worked at United Parcel Service.

He enjoyed science fiction and classic movies as well as rhythm and blues music.

"He was a sweet, kind and generous and had a beautiful smile,'' said his mother, Adrianne Cumberbatch.

A loving brother, he was especially close to his siblings and considered them his best friends. He also maintained friendships from childhood.

Mr. Cumberbatch believed in cultivating relationships from all walks of life. Age, creed or race were not a factor when it came to an opportunity to meet new people and share a rapport with others.

He believed in taking the best ideologies from all religions. His credo was "We are all one and have a different story to tell," his family said.

He is survived by his wife of 19 months, Cassandra; his son, Oliver Ethan; his daughter, Kennedy Skye Cumberbatch; his parents, Stephen and Adrianne Cumberbatch; his brothers, Stephen, Eric, Alfred and Nicholas; his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Dolores Jordan, and his paternal grandmother, Joyce Cumberbatch.

A memorial funeral service is planned for Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners. Arrangements include cremation.
