Christian Rathjen, 74, of Eltingville, a retired systems development executive who enjoyed spending time with his family, died Wednesday at home.
Born in Saugerties, N.Y., he grew up in Brooklyn and settled in Eltingville in 1975.
Mr. Rathjen graduated from Manual Training High School in Brooklyn and earned a bachelor of arts in business administration from Pace University, Manhattan.
He had a 35-year career at AXA Equitable in Manhattan, and rose to the position of vice president. He retired in 1998.
Mr. Rathjen enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking, home improvement and playing cards. He also enjoyed dining out and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Jean Berlingieri; his son, Christian; his daughters, Laura Bessler and Kathleen O’Connor; a brother, Joseph Valentine; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Clare's R.C. Church, both in Great Kills. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Queens.
