Helen Elizabeth “Betty “Granito of Stamford, CT died peacefully at her home on June 1, 2013, after a long but valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by her loving children. Betty was predeceased by her devoted husband of over 56 years, Frank H. Granito Jr. “Ditto”, in February of this year.
Betty was the daughter of the late Peter and Kitty Altieri of Dumont, New Jersey. She was born on April 11, 1933 in Manhattan and spent her grammar school years in the Clason Point area of the Bronx, where at 7 years old she met her future husband. Betty attended St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey and Montclair State Teachers College in Montclair, New Jersey. After her graduation in 1955 Betty joined the faculty of Hackensack High School, teaching English.
Betty married Ditto, then an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, on May 19, 1956. They spent the early years of their marriage in Alameda California where Ditto was stationed as a Naval Aviator with the Pacific Fleet and where their first child was born. In 1958 Betty and Ditto returned to civilian life on the east coast, ultimately settling in Clason Point where they raised their four children. They moved to Stamford in 1992 where they frequently entertained their children, grandchildren, extensive family, and many friends.
Betty was a devoted daughter, caring sister, loyal friend and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Blessed since birth with extraordinary beauty, charm and intelligence, Betty was the perfect hostess and the life of every gathering. Betty found her greatest joy in nurturing her children, the birth of every grandchild and every moment she spent with her childhood sweetheart and love of her life, her devoted husband Ditto.
Betty was the proud mother of Catherine and Tim Langan, Frank and Monica, Nora and Dan Harris and John and Luci. Betty was blessed with 16 grandchildren. She is survived by her brothers Richard (Sharon), Jimmy (Geri) and John (Kathleen) Altieri. She was predeceased by her brothers Tommy and Peter Altieri. She is survived by her sister-in-law Nora (Cass) Chomicz, Eileen (Andy) Simons and Sheila (Don) Dunphy and her brother-in-law Gennaro (Maureen) Granito. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Meg Granito and her brother-in-law John Teeple. Betty was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday June 5, 2013 at 10am at St. Vincent's Church 26 Green Village Road Madison, New Jersey. Burial will be followed at St. Vincent of Martyr Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Betty and Frank Granito Scholarship Fund at Cardinal Hayes High School, 650 Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York 10451.
