CHARLES JAMES ATKINSON, JR. (“CHARLIE”), age 81, a long-time resident of Stamford, entered into eternal rest February 24, 2010 after fighting a six-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was cared for at home until his final few days by his devoted wife, Toni. Charlie was born on November 1, 1928, in Port Chester, NY, to the late Charles James Atkinson, Sr. and Mary Frances (Wilson) Atkinson Lowry.
Charlie joined the U.S. Navy immediately after graduating from Port Chester High School in 1946 where he proudly served as a radio operator. Upon his return home from the service, Charlie began working at Life Savers Inc. where he met his beloved wife of 58 years, Toni. He began his Life Savers’ career in an entry level position on the production floor. Charlie obtained positions of increasing responsibility throughout his 38 years of employment and was eventually responsible for leading the entire production facility.
He was a member of St. Leo’s Church for over 40 years and a member of The American Legion.
Charlie was an avid reader, a man of quick wit and a sarcastic sense of humor. He took great pride in his meticulously manicured lawn, his flowers and his abundant display of Christmas decorations annually. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, music, dancing, camping in upstate Connecticut and spending time with his wife and family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Antoinette “Toni” Atkinson (Madonna), his three loving daughters Patti Hunt and husband Charlie; Joan Atkinson Nano and husband John; and Cheryl Daly and husband Michael; four cherished grandchildren, Robert Atkinson, Joseph Nano, Jamie Daly and Garrett Daly all of Stamford, CT; a sister Mary-Lou Stawicki of Edgewater, FL; and a brother John Atkinson of Edgewater, FL. His parents and stepfather, Walter Lloyd Lowry, predeceased him.
Family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 26 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. A mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 27 at 10:30 am at Saint Leo Church, 24 Roxbury Road in Stamford, CT.
