Judith M. Ryan (b. April 5, 1952 – d. December 27, 2010), PhD, STL, was associate professor of New Testament at the University of St. Thomas School of Theology at St. Mary's Seminary, Houston, Texas, where she had taught for the past seven years. After an initial degree in the biological sciences, Dr. Ryan went on to complete a PhD in Theology. She was a well established and respected author in her field, recently completing a commentary on St. Paul 's Letter to Philemon which she co-authored with her friend Dr. Bonnie Thurston in 2006. In addition to courses on both the Old and New Testament, Dr. Ryan also taught homiletics, Roman Catholic Social Teaching and Spirituality to both lays students, seminarians and those studying for the permanent deaconate. As associate professor at the UST School of Theology at St. Mary's, Dr. Ryan was a frequent instructor at parishes throughout the Galveston-Houston area as well as a guest speaker at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Previously she taught at Catholic University of America, Fordham University , New York University, the University of Scranton , College Misericordia, and St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore , Maryland . Originally from Brooklyn , New York , Dr. Ryan was a current resident of Sugar Land , Texas . She was preceded in death by her father, James Ryan, and her brother-in-law, Jerry. Judy is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Ryan; and sister, Barbara Ackerly Visitation will at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood, Stafford, TX 77477, 281-240-3300 on the 29th of December, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.; with a vigil beginning at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 3100 Sweetwater Blvd., Sugar Land, TX 77479, 281-980-9812 at 10:00 a.m. on the 30th of December, 2010.
