Herbert Paul Krog was born Jan. 2, 1934 in St. Joseph, MO and died at age 86 on August 15, 2020 in Sugar Land, TX. He is survived by his wife, Merilyn, daughter Kathy (Brad), and 3 grandchildren, Eric, Amanda, and Emily. Son Paul (Melanie) predeceased his parents.
Herb grew up during the Depression and WWII eras in a home of German ancestry. His grandfather, Jacob Buehner, a home builder and carpenter, disavowed his allegiance to the Kaiser on his US Citizenship certificate. After graduating 10th in his high school class behind 9 young women, Herb received a Naval Scholarship to Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering which included a Co-op with Union Carbide Nuclear Company. After college, he fulfilled his Naval commitments by serving on the USS Bennington aircraft carrier stationed in San Diego, CA. He was discharged as a LTJG with training in Naval Justice as an Assistant Legal Officer.
In 1959, he returned to Oak Ridge and started work with Union Carbide Nuclear Company once again. In 1962, he married Merilyn Eldridge at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston. Merilyn faithfully supported Herb throughout his 45 year+ career with Union Carbide. Assignments included projects in Houston, Priolo, Italy, So. Charleston, WV, Sistersville, WV, Taft, LA, NYC/Danbury, CT and Kuwait City. Herb traveled extensively for business and enjoyed the creative processes of engineering earning from some the title of “The Engineers’ Engineer”.
Herb enjoyed volunteering in the community. He served on Church Councils, the Girls Scouts Council in Ohio, Community Association Boards, the Ft. Bend County Levee Improvement District #14, and the Sweetwater CC senior golf league board. He spent a good deal of time playing golf and “hitting a bucket of balls” for practice. It did pay off in his team winning an annual club championship. As Merilyn played contract bridge, Herb took lessons and went to tournaments with her, but with his own partners. In baseball season, he followed the St. Louis Cardinals with passion. He enjoyed classical music and fulfilled a dream taking the family to a Boston Pops concert directed by Arthur Fiedler. PBS concerts and dramas were often in view on the weekends.
A memorial service will be held on Sat., Sept. 5th at 11 AM at Christ Church (Methodist), Sugar Land, 3300 Austin Parkway, Sugar Land, TX 77479. COVID restrictions apply.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Herb’s memory may be made to Christ Church, Sugar Land’s Sunday School Outreach ministries or the Ft. Bend Symphony Orchestra, 1615 Rambling Stone Drive, Richmond, TX 77046.
