(nee Hasser) fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, ended her journey through this life on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at age 72.
Beloved wife of Harry J. Bennett; dear mother of Matthew (Emily) Bennett, Mark (Beth Ann) Bennett, and Michael (Megan) Bennett; precious grandmother of Zachary Bennett, Christopher Leon, Amalie and Sami Bennett and Sam Katcher, the lights of her life; dearest daughter of Carol (Kueneke) Hasser and the late George V. Hasser, Sr.; cherished sister of Mary (Michael) Gebauer, George V. (Dr. Glenda Bryant) Hasser, Jr., Michael (Jeanne) Hasser and Betty (Michael) Hensley, the late Karen Baseel and the late Madelynn Hopson; and, dear sister-in-law of Carol Beile and Robert (Joyce) Bennett; adored aunt, great-aunt, niece, cousin, friend and mentor to many.
Sandy was an alumnus of St. Anthony of Padua Grade School, Bishop DuBourg High School, and Webster University. In addition to her vocation as a Genealogical Researcher, Author, and Historian (including an oral history project now part of the Smithsonian collection), Sandy dedicated her professional life to public service and democratic politics, most recently as volunteer coordinator, community organizer, and finally as legislative assistant for Congressman Richard Gephardt. She also served as Commissioner for the MO Botanical Garden Taxing District, served on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Public Library and was a 1980’s Member of the St. Louis Board of Freeholders. Though accomplished and passionate in all endeavors, Family and Friendship were Sandy’s greatest passions of all. Her generosity and loyalty are legendary and will live on in the hearts of those who had the honor of knowing her.
Services: Funeral from Hoffmeister Mortuary, 6464 Chippewa, Saturday, September 29, 2012, 10a.m. Chapel Service. Internment Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation Friday, 2-8pm and Saturday 8-10am with Chapel Service beginning at 10 am. Sandy was a lifelong supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It is requested that donations in her name be made to St. Jude’s in lieu of flowers.
