Dr. Joseph Bernard Dence, age 82, of St. Louis, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. He was born December 16, 1941, to Joseph Baldwin and Rebecca Jayne (nee: Close) Dence. They have preceded him in death. Joe is survived by: his loving wife of 49 years Carmen Sofia (nee: Nunez Trujillo) Dence; his siblings: Dr. Thomas P. Dence (Kathy), Doris Troknya (the late Tom); five nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
As a teenager, Joe attended high school in Toledo, Ohio. First, he spent a year at Woodward High, then 3 years at Roger's High, where he was the valedictorian in 1959. During those summers he earned his pay by working as a golf caddy at the famous Inverness Club in Toledo. A highlight came in 1957 when he caddied in the U. S. Open tournament. He followed this up with 4 years of study at Bowling Green State University, where he majored in chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Later in life, he teamed up with his younger brother Thomas (who had a Ph D. In mathematics from Colorado State) to co-author approximately 20 technical papers in referred journals in number theory. In addition the two jointly published 3 mathematics textbooks, A First Course of Collegiate Mathematics, 1994, Elements of Number Theory, 1998, and Advanced Calculus: A Transition to Analysis, 2010.
Joe earned his PhD from the California Institute of Technology, and retired as an adjunct professor of Chemistry and Mathematics, from University of Missouri - St. Louis, after 40 years of university life. His mathematical interests were in number theory and the endless beauties of the calculus. His interests also included statistical mechanics and botany. He also enjoyed classical music (Beethoven and Mahler, especially), cooking, international travel (Scotland, Colombia, Spain, especially), and trumping everything Carmen.
