Bernice was born in St. Louis on June 1, 1942, to Walter and Genevieve Zygmunt. She was married to her soul mate and partner in life, Benny, on June 11, 1966. After marrying, Bernice and Benny settled in south St. Louis and raised four boys: Edward, Raymond, Richard, and her “little guy” Stanley. Only her faith in God was more important to Bernice than the health and well-being of her four boys. Whether it was chauffeuring them from one sports practice to the next, spending countless hours in hospital emergency rooms, attending various school activities, or providing motherly care and attention, Bernice was resolute in her devotion to her “boys.” Throughout her life, Bernice was an active member in both churches that she and Benny attended – St. Stanislaus Kostka and St. Gabriel’s. Bernice lived a life that was reflective of her faith in that she did well upon others and bestowed love and kindness on those she touched. Bernice was a prideful Polish woman who was always there for her family and friends and never asked for anything in return. She was known in her community as a kind gentle soul who loved to talk about everything. In recent years, Bernice’s mobility was limited but that did not stop her from spending countless hours talking and interacting with all of her grandchildren and maintaining an active interest in the lives of those she loved.
Bernice was fond of saying to those she loved, “be sure to say a prayer to the Good Lord to look out for you and take care of you.” May the Good Lord now watch over Bernice and take care of her. She will be missed by all those she touched.
Bernice is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Genevieve Zygmunt, her grandparents, Stanley and Bernice Lubaszewski and Mary and Joseph Zygmunt, and several aunts and uncles.
