Johnston, Michael C. December 24, 1939-May 7, 2021. Mike was born in Detroit, Michigan and moved with his parents to Grosse Pointe Woods in 1949. He graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1958. Mike obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan (Dearborn) and began teaching elementary education at Poupard School in Harper Woods, before moving to Gabriel Richard Elementary in Grosse Pointe where he would remain an elementary teacher for the rest of his career. He continued post-graduate studies at the Rackham School at U of M and Wayne State. Mike dedicated his entire working life to the careful education of generations of Grosse Pointe elementary students.
Mike enjoyed music and theater and was a professionally trained vocalist, and held soloist positions in local churches. He was an active member of the Episcopalian church until his death. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Russel M. and Crystal R. Johnston, his brother Daniel W. Johnston, and sister Drussela F. Douglas. He is survived by his brother, Peter R. Johnston, six nieces and nephews, and two great nieces, and his dear friend, Gail A. Smith. At Mike's direction, no services will be held. Memorial donations to Christ Church-Detroit (www.christcd.org - for the kitchen project; 960 E. Jefferson, Detroit, MI 48207) or the Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org -4245 North Fairfax Dr., Ste. 100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606) will be appreciated, but the best way to remember Mike is to thank a teacher.
