Frederick Arnhold Hessler

Hessler, Frederick, of St. Clair Shores, February 7, 2017. Fred had a full life over 100 plus remarkable years. He was predeceased by his devoted wife Ruth and is survived by his loving companion Betty Mitschang. He was an inspiration to his children, Donna Newman (the late James), Frederick (Kathleen Mundy), and Charles (Denise); to his grandchildren, James Newman, John (Laura) Newman, Daniel Newman, Leah (Gregory) Martin, and Charles Hessler; and to his great grandchildren, Tyler, Evie, and a third on the way. Fred was like a father to many including Karen Hessler and Tamiko Rice, his devoted caregiver. Fred was proud of his four and half years of service in the United States Army during World War II and felt honored to serve the community in many ways (Lakeview School Board, City of St. Clair Shores, Senior Activity Center, St. Gertrude Church, Senior Men's Club of Grosse Pointe, Men's and Women's Garden Club of Grosse Pointe). He had an active social life, joining informal groups such as the “Congenials” and the “West Side Group.” Fred traveled extensively around the world – primarily with friends of The Michigan Catholic – and was proud to tell people that he had visited over 30 countries, all after the age of 65. Fred traced his German ancestry back to the early 1600’s and was a member of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. Fred's entire career was in the food service industry, where he gained many lasting friendships and industry awards. Hundreds of relatives, neighbors, and friends will remember Fred's positive energy and enduring smile. Visitation will be in the Kaul Funeral, 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores, on Friday February 10 from 3 to 8 p.m. There will be an in-state period beginning at 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Resurrection on Saturday February 11 at 11:30 in Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 28301 Little Mack, St. Clair Shores.
