Sophie was born in Zyrawa in the Ukraine on February 3, 1924, and she had a life that was challenging and turbulent because of the era that she born into but that made her into a fiercely independent lady. In 1946 with assistance from the allied forces she moved to England where she got married and raised a family.
She emigrated to Canada from England with her husband Orest in 1973 after being reunited with her brother via the Red Cross, who she had not seen for over 30 years due to separation from her family during the Second World War. Canada gave her the opportunity to embrace a new and different way of life from that she had had in England which she enjoyed to the full.
