Passed away at home on October 2, 2024, after a brave struggle borne with dignity, optimism, and with his usual good humour at the age of 76.
Born in Buffalo New York on May 9th,1948 to parents, William and Jean (nee Philps) White. Survived by his dearly loved and best friend Jane (nee Chapman) White. They were married in Fort Erie Ontario on May 11, 1974. Lovingly remembered by his 4 sons, Matthew, Adam, Nathan and David and his daughters-in-law Christy and Lisa. Amazing, fun " silliest Grandpa ever" to Eleanor, Carter, Edmund, Lyla, Oliver, and Theodore. Will be sadly missed by his brother John White (Sandra), and his brother-in-law William Chapman.
Dick and Jane shared a passion for the arts, classical music, opera, musical theatre and live theatre in general. In his 45 years as a teacher, he passed these passions on to countless students in Hamilton, Grimsby, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, often staging Remembrance Day ceremonies, holiday concerts, and live musicals joining the children on stage.
In his "retirement job" he found great satisfaction in his role as teacher/librarian at Wheatley School reading daily in his famous "Mr. White voice" to children ages 2-14.
In their 50 years of marriage, Dick and Jane created a home filled with love and laughter where people were always made to feel welcome. Dick was a wonderful host to many, many parties of staff, family, and friends.
In the past 4 years he loved meeting new friends and neighbours on Tulip Tree Common and Black Walnut Common, always with his friendly Golden Retriever, Duchess, at his side.
Before his illness he enjoyed singing with his amazing baritone voice in many choirs, most recently Chorus Niagara and Choralis Camerata.
Jane and family will receive friends at Hulse & English Funeral Home & Chapel, 75 Church Street St. Catharines on Wednesday, October 9th from 2-4 and 7-9pm.
Stories of "Mr. White" are most welcome to be shared in years to come with his beloved grandchildren.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private family celebration of life will take place at a later date.
Flowers gratefully declined, memorial donations to Canadian Blood Services would be appreciated by the family, to honour the many blood transfusions that kept Dick comfortable over the past 4 years (or donate blood if you are able).
"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
