The Frank & Sylvia Nash Family
I stand in awe and amazement when I think of the diversity of the 12 children of Frank and Sylvia Nash considering we were all raised in an identical environment. 
As each of us drifted away from those old rugged Ozark Mountains we were completely oblivious to the impact of the uncharted world that henceforth had been beyond our reach. 
It immediately became necessary for each of us to develop a focus of thought and clarity of purpose in order to achieve any worthwhile goals. 
We scattered in different directions, not only geographically, but in fields of employment. We apparently possessed an uncharted potential to reach beyond our known world. 
It is a miracle that any of us survived in a modern world without extensive prior knowledge, in the diversity of employment and the expectations thrust upon us that at times seemed overwhelming. But apparently we have all adapted and have succeeded in our chosen fields or in fields that were thrust upon us by change and we persevered as some of these particular jobs became a lifetime endeavor. 
We have all become productive citizens, so perhaps being raised in isolation and near starvation wasn't so bad after all as it apparently gave us the determination to break the cycle of poverty and dysfunction and to achieve self esteem and personal adjustment. It also instills competitiveness in just how far we can go. 
Now many of our children and grandchildren have college degrees or are currently attending a university that will ultimately enhance a chance of a secure future. 
College for us Ozark farm children was so far beyond our logistical and financial capabilities it wasn't even a remote dream. Nevertheless we have reached beyond our known world of our youth and for the most part have found employment that has sustained our immediate family and provided us with an adequate retirement in our golden years. Perhaps that way of life we experienced back in those old rugged hills wasn't so bad after all. It apparently has not been a determent in our adult lives. It certainly instilled in each of us a work ethic necessary to accomplish any worthwhile goals. 
I have no regrets or remorse relative to the substandard living conditions of my youth. Frankly, I am proud and defensive and believe our parents are to be commended for their labor and teachings in raising such a large family who all have turned out to be honest, patriotic citizens with high moral standards. 
All those farms are vacant now. No longer will you hear the call of a young farmer boy directing a horse or mule between rows of corn or other crops. 
No longer will you see the neat checkerboard corn rows or rows of cane or an ole horse going round and round turning the cane press. 
You won't see or hear the sound of children as they squeal in delight at the ole swimming hole or hear their cries of pain from a skinned knee or other painful mishaps. 
You won't see the hurry scurry of farm youth going about their daily chores and a mother scrubbing clothes on an old washboard with huge kettles of boiling water. While a sister hangs up clothes on a line to flap in the wind and dry. 
You won't hear the steady drone of an old 1928 Buick motor as it turns the belt driven saw mill and the whine of the circle saw as it slices thru a log. 
All has gone now, except the vivid and detailed memory of our every day existence on that never to be repeated distant past. 
Never again will you see these young boys working in a hay field as they position a gallon jug on their shoulder and a finger thru the handle drinking what was cool spring water. 
All these things are in a distant past when you had an elated feeling as the first rain drops began to fall producing a unique smell and a good feeling as it meant new and extended life for the pastures and crops. Perhaps you may have watched as they walked toward the house carrying a 22 rifle with two or three squirrels hanging from their belt and an ole dog following along. 
Or watched as they threw the harness onto a horse and tightened the harness strap and belly band in preparation for skidding logs, plowing or perhaps pulling a wagon. 
You will probably never again see these boys engaged in a corn cob fight as they run in, out and thru the ole barn, and perhaps yell when hit on the hand with an ole wet corn cob.

Living Memories

One by one we build our memories of days and years gone by,
Remembering our good times together, not realizing how time does fly.

In the stillness of an evening when the day is almost through,
I close my eyes and remember many pleasures I have had with you.

We travel to many places together, with many more to see,
We have played in sand at Galveston and saw the Great Smokies of Tennessee.

My memory bank is never full, there is always room for more,
This is a new day, let's go away, new pleasures to explore.

From the beautiful Canadian Rockies, from Banff to Lake Louise,
To the coast of California and the great redwood trees.

From the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, to Florida's Atlantic shore,
From the great plains of Kansas to Utah's desert floor.

From the Cumberland Falls in Kentucky, to Oregon's River Roughe,
To the Golden Gate Bridge, to Lake Tahoe, to Current River in a canoe.

We watched the sunrise over the mountains, walked along the ocean shore,
From the heights of tall mountains we have viewed the canyon floor.

From the bright lights of a city, to the beauty of mountain stream,
Just being with you, enjoying our travels is like a pleasurable dream.

There are no words to describe my feelings inside, just knowing the pleasure you give.
I will add to my storehouse of memories each day as long as I live.

I remember sitting and holding your hand by a peaceful bubbling stream,
It was so hard for me to realize this moment is not a dream.

I will add this moment to my list of memories, of the many pleasures we share.
You are the one who makes it happen, no other could ever compare.

The many places we have been together, each a special pleasure to recall,
The memories of being in your arms is the most pleasant of them all.

There once was a man who found his sweetheart. They hadn't realized what their love would start. Every night before they went to bed she would say I love you. And I love you bigger is what the man had said. Their love grew and spread to two little kids who moved on to have five young grandkids. And every morning with his arms held out wide, the man said I love you this big, to his beloved wife. The man's life was hard before he met her. But the woman saying yes was just the cure. Time ticked on, 59 years. The wife said I love you. And got a reply of I love you bigger dear. The man was so funny, always spreading his cheer. He was a happy husband whose love shown clear. That year he grew sick, but held on strong. He passed away but his love is never gone. The wife while saying her last good-bye reached down to him with a tear in her eye. She would miss that smile, his jokes and his songs and she said, “Don, I love you bigger.” Now you get to sing Heaven's songs.

A Country Boy's Mother
My memory takes me back to yesteryear, when growing up on the farm, of how your firm and gentle care kept each one from harm. 
You washed our clothes on an old washboard, then hung them out to dry. Yes, mother I recall your hard labor in those distant days gone by. 
I realize now there were many times you really were not able, Yet you toiled in a hot kitchen and worked in the fields to keep food on our table. 
There were no modern conveniences to ease your heavy load, Everything was done the hard way, it was a rocky road. Although it was a hard life, living off the land, I recall how you taught and guided us, with a kind and gentle hand. 
The pleasant memories of my youth, in one way or another, I owe to a great woman, my kind and loving mother. Thanks for your guidance, and all that you have done, I am glad you are my mother, I love you. Your Son

I want to thank each and every one of you for being with Dormalee and I on our special day. 
One of the greatest compliments we can ever have is for so many friends and relatives to gather in our honor. Each of  you hold a special place in our heart. 
And each of you have contributed to our happiness of life over the years. You have added many fond memories to deposit in our memory bank. 
Quite often as we sit and relax or perhaps as we drive down the highway we dig into our memory bank and ask "Remember when?" 
Then we re-live a time in our past that you were with us. Life has been good to us this past 50 years. We still hold hands, we walk together talk together and learn together. And on accassion we cry together, in serious health problems or the loss of a loved one. 
I still get that special feeling when I see her in a crowded room and I feel lonesome when she's not around. 
It has been said that true love is unconditional; it is kind and forgiving, it is not selfish or critical. It is from the heart. 
It is the blending of two lives, like the circle of our wedding rings. It never ends. 
God has blessed our marriage in many ways. He has given us "two great sons" two sweet daughters, five wonderful grandchildren and a host of great friends and relatives to share our life as demonstration by you being with us today. 
Few people are fortunate enough to reach the occassion of living with their best friends for half a century. Plus the hope of many years to follow. Dormalee and I have now reached that mileston. And we are eternally grateful that you are part of our life. 
Let us now visit together and collect memories to deposit in our memory bank.

“What is Love?”

Two people destined to intertwine,
Both of them ever so caring and kind,
I admire these two and the love that they share,
The great thing they have now comes very rare,
They are always fun, quick to get the first laugh,
And their company and conversations,
Is always a pleasure to have.
They both give great advice and even better hugs and kisses,
They are so proud of their family; it's more than all their wishes.
A love like theirs isn't common, but they've passed it on you see,
Because my dad and mom fell in love like that and had Jason, Tim, and me.
Ron and Marsha decided to join in and have it their goal
Then popped up Leann and Lisa Nicole.

But see by passing their love to them, their job was not yet done
They still had to pass it on to us,
And trust me; it's something you cannot outrun.
I've learned many of life's lessons
Including that true love does exist,
And when the one you're destined to shows up,
You cannot resist.
You'll know it in a second,
You'll feel your body shake,
The love that's being passed on,
Is the chance you need to take?
Many lessons I have learned
Like how to parallel park my car,
And that Grandpa and Grandmas house is never very far.
You can always knock on their door
And it will open with a smile,
They will invite you in and always ask you to stay awhile.
They love their card games
And the memories we all share,
They were always willing and able,
And both were always fair.
We share so many memories
Each branch upon your tree,
We are so lucky to have,
The love of family.
You both have not only showed us
That true love is one of a kind,
You have always taught us to never leave anyone behind.
Never go to bed mad
Say “I love you” every chance you get,
Don't fuss over the silly stuff,
And never slap or hit.
No jumping on the beds
Respect what others have to say,
And don't throw a tantrum,
When you don't get your way.
Play restaurant or ball
Slide down the waterslide,
You can choose either one,
Of which you can decide.
Grandpa will put you behind the wheel
He'll let you steer while he works the pedal,
He trusts you enough to drive in his piece of metal.
Grandma will let you dress her face up like a clown
And will offer to go anywhere that's right about town.
The two people who not only love each other unconditionally
But holds God's world in their hands,
Need nothing to prove their love for each other,
Not even a pair of wedding bands.
I admire them both,
And pray one day I will find,
My “special” partner,
To share a love so pure and kind,
I thank you both for life's lessons,
And the love you've passed on to me,
Without you both in my life,
I wouldn't be the person that you see!

Memories

We can always draw contentment as we look back on our past,
The many things we do together gives us memories that always last.

In the quietness of the evening as sure as the sun will sink
We sort out little pleasures to store in our memory bank.

My life with you is such a joy, you have so much to give
May we continue building memories as long as we both may live.

When our children were still at home, we took a trip out west
It's so very hard to determine which times we enjoyed the best.

Was it the streets of San Francisco or the drive up the Pacific coast
Or the cabin in the Cascade Mountains that we enjoyed the most.

We have enjoyed so many things, the many places we did roam
Not only from our travels, but many right here at home.

Now our children have spread their wings, made new nests all their own
They have added happiness to our family, we shall never be alone.

We create our many memories from the experiences we have had
Let's store all the good ones, and not too many that are sad.

I am anxious for the years ahead, divided by so many days
I can add to my storehouse of memories, in so many wondrous ways.

Our memory bank is such a wonderful thing, a gift from Heaven above
Let's keep adding to our storehouse and fill it to capacity with love.

At any time, at any place, I can reach back in my life
And bring up a beautiful memory of a wonderful loving wife.

So if I should leave before you do, this earth to depart
Remember I have had more blessings than I ever deserved, because of you, sweetheart.

In 1953 we said we would spend our life-time together and we have gone a long way toward that goal. Such a wonderful life we have made. The joy of a son and daughter and we are so fortunate because they are the best. They each have a happy life because they married their best friend as I did.

The happiness we felt as we first held Donna & Ron and the joy they gave us can never be put down in words but we know. The love and memories they gave us we will remember always. Words can not describe the happiness of having our wonderful grandchildren to love. Life has been good to us.

And now as we start on our next 40 years and start building more memories I want you to know these 40 years have been wonderful because of you and I love you even more than I did in 1953.

Journey of Love

We had dated only a short time when I realized I was falling in love and wanted you to keep,

My love continued to grow, becoming boundless and like still waters it ran deep.

I needed to know if you would accept me to always be by your side the remainder of your life

I began to decide of a place and time when I would ask you to be my wife.

Then on March 26, 1953, I drove to a spot that was secluded and still

Just outside of town on an unpaved road and stopped on the crest of a hill.

I was so nervous and didn't know how I would respond if you said "no"

Because in my heart I knew I could never let you go.

And if your answer was "yes" my heart would continue to be in a whirl

As I have yet to convince your dad and mom to let go of their sweet baby girl.

You were 16 and many would think you are too young to marry, not thinking of you as grown

Yet in my mind you possessed all the qualities of a grown-up and the most beautiful woman I have ever known.

With my heart beating wildly I asked "Will you marry me?" Then you answered "yes" and my heart joyfully skipped a beat

For I knew living with you I would always be happy and my life would be complete.

And now 56 years have passed since we held each other's hand and made a vow never to part,

These years have given us a great and loving family that we will always hold dear to our heart.

We love each of you equally and each of you have made us proud

And at any time and any place we will be honored to introduce you in a crowd.

I have many times been told because of my family I have been blessed

I always smile quietly and say "Thank you" while in my mind I compare you to all the rest.

Each one of you have given me a special kind of memory and always the best you have to give,

I thank each of you for every memory and I know there is more and that is why I want to always live.

Grandpa's hands have served him well through the years.
They tied his boots, held a rifle and wiped away tears.

Decorated with a band of gold for all to see,
He found the one for him.
Her name is Dormalee.

His hands held his newborn daughter and then a son.
They held his daughter's arm as he walked her down the aisle
To marry the man whose heart she won.

They trembled and shook when he buried his parents who he adored.
He folded them quietly and prayed unto his Lord.

Grandpa's hands show the road he's traveled
The mark of where he's been.
Son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

Hands that held ours now hold our children's hands
As he gently rocks them to sleep
There is magic in Grandpa's hands,
And love in his heart that we will always keep.

My Uncle Don

I have an Uncle Don
who has a son named Ron.
His wife is my Aunt Dormalee
She's just as sweet and pretty as she can be.
Donna is his daughter
She always acts like she aught'er.
Uncle Don & I have a famous handshake.
Actually it's a handshake that we fake.
I was very little when my Uncle Don started this
but to my life this has brought great bliss.
My Uncle Don writes rhymes.
He writes them all the time.
He writes them to bless his friends and family.
His poems have blessed everyone, including me.
Once I read one that made me flip -
It was about my Grandma Nash shaking her hip!!!
I believe God gives gifts to everyone.
Writing poems was God's gift to Uncle Don.
I believe that we are to share the gift we've been given.
If we do, I believe that we will be rewarded in Heaven.
One day we'll stand before the throne
Our deeds from earth will all be shown.
God will look at Uncle Don and say,
"I gave you a gift and you gave it away."
You blessed those around you both great and small.
And then from the Book of Life your name He will call.
Because you gave your life to Him
Lived a good life and turned away from sin,
An eternity in Heaven awaits you.
And I will be there too!
And when on those golden streets, I see you.
I'll smile, extend my hand, and walk on through!!!
Of all the Uncle Don's in the whole world, You're my favorite one!

Time has passed quickly since '53, 
when a new life began for you and me.

We have shared many joys, some sadness and tears
that made the bond stronger thru all the years.

When two people live together, somehow or another,

they begin to act and look like each other.

We are getting absent minded, both me and you
seems we are always forgetting what we were going to do.

I had thought up a verse for this poem, but believe it or not
when I sat down to write it, I had already forgot.

We stick our reminder notes on the dash of our car,
reminds us to return home before we get very far.

We get so aggravated, we could almost cry
but somehow muddle through and always get by.

I was talking to ole whats you call it, can't remember his name, 
said he is forgetful too, so we're all the same.

There is one thing about forgetting that I really hate
by the time I think of it, it's usually too late.

But we will stick together thru thick and thin
now, what goes on this line? Well shucks, I forgot again.

The trash truck just went by, I jumped with a shout
just remembered I forgot to take my garbage can out.

Oh well, he will be back next Thursday, I'm thinking
but by that time I'm afraid my trash will be stinking.

Some day I may forget to go get you at work
if that ever happens, I would feel like a jerk.

I am enjoying my retirement, just wish you were here
we could set down and have a soda, since we don't ever drink beer.

I fixed a bowl of cereal, but now ain't that a bugger
I plumb forgot what I did with the sugar.

Guess I had better quit this, cause I'm getting so silly
I'll go next door and visit with Andy and Billy.

I'm getting so lazy and just like a fool
I turned down sub custodian at Carrollton Oaks School.

No use in me workin', cause I got a honey
That goes to work daily and brings in the money.

My in-laws – very special, most generous very supportive of our idea in life.
My favorite fishing partner.

Donna not only my wife but my Best friend. Nobody stands in front of her a perfect mother to our kids. The keeper of the peace and harmony of our family.

Jason is everything I expected of him. His new endeavor is the perfect place for him. I knew in my heart he will be the best coach that there is.

Aimee she is on her way to a wonderful life: she has her doubts but I know she will be alright in whatever she decides. She knows what she would like to be.

Tim definitely the comedian of the group. He is always laughing and happy go lucky. I hope that he can find his niche in life. He is unsure at this time. He will be just fine though. He needs to be found, over over up over

“ New Horizons”
For Christmas this year I ask Santa for New Horizons to Explore.
Like a new home and great neighbors who come knocking at my door.
I also ask for a special gift, that doesn't cost a dime.
And that is for a very long life, to be given one day at a time.
Then as time rolls along, and each day goes by.
Perhaps a neighbor will drop by to share a cup of coffee and maybe a piece of pie.
It has been said, it takes a very long time to grow a true and trusting friend.
Yet there are those who quickly demonstrate a true friendship, on whom you can depend.
I believe Santa Claus searched far and wide for a few special folks, the best that could be found.
Then brought them all together, they are my neighbors right here in New Town.
And now Santa as I look into the future, I know I can never find.
A better group of folks for neighbors knowing they will always bring me, continued peace of mind.

The Nashs

As far back as I can remember, I have always felt blessed to be a part of such a close, loving family. To this day, I run into people who know my parents and they ask me if I know what wonderful people they are. My parents, brother, aunts, uncles, and cousins are all a big part of who I am today. I am thankful every day for my roots ~ the Nash/Edwards union.
Some of my memories are of Grandpa Nash sitting in his chair under a huge old tree waiting for company to come driving down the long gravel road. He always reached out for a big hug and kiss and the more family he had around him, the better. 
Grandma Nash loved to tickle you on the back of the neck with a blade of grass to get you to slap at it and jump. She amazed me knowing everyone's birthday.
Janice and Bev and I used to play hide n' seek when we were young and when we were teenagers, we'd listen to 45 records over and over and over.
We had several relatives stay with us when we lived at Legion Park and I remember watching Uncle Dave flip burgers at Chuck-A-Burger. Uncle Vertis walking Ron and I  to school when he was in the service; Dad putting shaving cream in Uncle Doug's hand while he slept and then tickling his nose to get him to wipe the cream all over his face.
I also remember “teaching” my brother how to ride a big bike when he couldn't reach the pedals and I just gave him a shove & down the hill he went until he fell over. He has since forgiven me! Ha
My mother's parents, Ralph and Dena Edwards, were good friends of Frank and Sylvia Nash & always welcomed in each other's homes. My parents and Terry's parents are the same way & that is so unusual this day & age.
Terry and I met in 1972 and will be married 30 years next September. God knew exactly what he was doing when he picked Terry to be my soul – mate for life. We have three terrific children, Jason, Aimee, and Tim who bring us more happiness than you can imagine. Our kids know the blessings of a close, loving family and how important roots are.
We have a picture of a family tree on our wall at home that reads:
 “A family is like the branches of a tree.
                 We may grow in different directions
                 yet our roots remain as one.
                  Each of our lives will always
                  be a special part of the other.”

I was 16 when I met the handsome, exciting and wonderful man of my dreams. He is and has always been my best friend. We have been blessed with 2 children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law and 5 grandchildren. Ron and Donna have given us so much happiness. They are always happy being together, never had an argument and still enjoy getting together. Donna, our beautiful baby girl has always been such a joy, so loving and helpful. She has a sweet personality and is always the same. Terry loves Donna and is so good to her and that is all we can ask for. He works hard to provide for his family and is a good dad to Jason, Aimee and Tim. Terry and Donna gave us 3 grandchildren to love, each one special. When little they would spend the weekend with us and gave us so many happy memories that it would be impossible to list them all like Jason saying "Grandma, I do this a lot," Aimee playing beauty shop and Tim saying "Grandma, sing Old Mac Donald."

Our happiness was overflowing when Ron was born. A handsome baby boy so loving and giving. His wish was to have a loving wife and family so his dream came true. He works hard, is dedicated, kind, thoughtful and a wonderful dad to Leann and Lisa. Marsha fulfilled his wish. Her family comes first as it should be and as always if our family is happy then we are happy.

The first time Don took me to meet Dad and Mom, I was nervous but they welcomed me with love and his brothers and sisters became my brothers and sisters, each one so special and giving me memories to remember, so many I can't think of them all but here are a few:

* Our trip to Vallies. Dave using his van to take us to fun places. Vallie always with a smile.

* Alfreda, so thoughtful to bring us pictures of her family

* Ed and Lorraine taking us to dinner

* Erv and Betty inviting us to dinner at their house and Betty and I sharing books and recipes.

* Going to Texas with Murl and Wilma, really had a nice visit.

* Playing Skip-Bo with Arnold and Juanita.

* Our family get-togethers at Les and Zelda's and Zelda going with us on our trips, always fun to stop at Keith and Sherrys.

* Going to Paul and Wilma's and greeted with open arms.

* Trudy staying with us then visiting with her and Larry in St. Louis and Salem. We always feel welcome.

* Vert and Gloria greeting us with a hug and a cup of coffee. Gloria so sweet.

* Visiting at Curt's with a good meal, hug and laughter. Rocking Tonya when she was a baby.

* Going to visit Dave and Kathy. So much fun, every time a new adventure. A lot of laughter. They do so much for us.

* The door is always open at Darrell and June's. They make us feel at home. A special couple with a loving family.

* When we visit at Adrian and Janice's we are in for a treat, taking the boat to a restaurant (opened just for us.)Watching the birds while we drink coffee, and Adrian bringing us a Popsicle while we watch T.V.

How fortunate I have been to have a wonderful Dad, Mom and sister to love me and take care of me. To meet Don at the right time then to have a second Dad and Mom and to have more brothers and sisters to include me in their family. you are all Special.

When we were kids we always loved coming to your house. Uncle Don always made us laugh. He also showed me many things about how to be a man, how to face your obstacles and how to forgive. But we also loved to come because of your kind and gentle spirit. You always made us feel welcomed and loved.

I know how difficult these days are for you, but I hope you find comfort in the legacy your marriage has left to all of us who had the pleasure to grow up with your and Uncle Don's influence.

Dear Dormalee,
Hello, how are you doing, girl? I hope your answer might be something like this, "losing a loved one is so very difficult, I have grieved, cried and everything else and finally come to realize that Don will not be back with me on this earth, so I look forward with great expectations of meeting him in heaven. In the meantime he left me this beautiful, loving family to help me struggle through each day with half of me gone."

Dormalee, we realize that this day is not great and pray that God will shower you with his love and strength to get you through life now alone.

Remember all the fond memories we made at Pattonville! What a Blessing.
 
You and I must be about the only survivors of that secretary group. Guess God saved the best for last. ha ha

Although we don't see each other as much as we would like, we still think about you a lot. Heaven has gained a great angel, and he and grandma are having a party with the harmonica and Grandma dancing. You are in our hearts and prayers. May you find peace in the many memories you shared together.

Dear Aunt Dormalee,
Thank you for being such a wonderful aunt. You were perfect for Uncle Don! I remember having your mother as a Sunday School teacher when we visited Grandma's church. I thought she was the nicest lady I had ever met. I remember telling mom how beautiful & nice she was & mom told me that's Dormalee's mother. I thought "no wonder Aunt Dormalee is so nice - she's like her mom!" It's funny how certain memories stick with you.
I am thankful for all the wonderful memories I have of you & Uncle Don!
P.S. One of my favorite parts of Uncle Don's funeral was when Ronnie told me that he would continue Uncle Don's handshake. It meant the world to me.

Don was such a wonderful man. He was so kind and caring and had a great sense of humor. The two of you were a very special couple and we think so much of both of you. We are glad that he doesn't have to suffer anymore. He is in a better place. I will never forget "sweetie pie". Take care of yourself and let us know if there is anything we can do for you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

So sorry to learn of Don's passing. Although we seemed to have somewhat lost touch with you all, you were never far from our thoughts and minds. We shall forever cherish our memories of time past.
