Roy W. Frank

Roy William Frank, 92, United States Navy (Ret.), who later went on to work for Wiggins Airways in Norwood, Massachusetts, died April 29th , 2012 at Mount Vernon Health and Rehabilitation Center, Alexandria, Virginia. He surrendered to a recent battle with cancer. Roy was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in West Roxbury and attended Boston English.

Roy Frank entered the Navy in 1940 at Newport, Rhode Island. During World War II, he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, participated in numerous campaigns, and served on several war ships, most notably the USS Wasp CV-7, USS Brennan DE-13, USS Inch DE-146 - 4 Battle Stars, USS Hale DD-642, and USS Robert H. McCard DD-822. He earned numerous campaign and service medals during his career. He remained in the fleet reserve after his active duty service and since his retirement from the Navy in 1960, he was an active voice in ship’s reunions and restorations. He was a member of the VFW and many other Veterans groups.

Roy Frank loved the Navy. In 2010, he celebrated his 91st birthday at the United State Navy Memorial in Washington, DC. At the event, the Chief, Naval Operations (CNO), honored his service. Roy Frank is a plank owner and has actively supported the efforts of the Navy Memorial since its inception.

Following his military career, Roy Frank lived in Norwood, Massachusetts with his family of five children. During those years, his passion and hobby was HAM radio operator, call sign K1OHO. He moved to Meredith, New Hampshire in 1976 with his wife, Doris M. Frank, and two sons. Doris predeceased him in 2004. In 2010, Roy Frank moved to Alexandria, Virginia to be near a daughter and her family.

Roy Frank is also predeceased by his daughter, sister, and grandchild. He is lovingly missed by all his surviving children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and a special little dog.

Roy W. Frank, together with his beloved wife, Doris M. Frank, will be honored at the Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 11:00am.
