Peggy Anne Byrd Ledeboer

Peggy Anne Byrd Ledeboer was born July 23, 1953 and died February 11, 2023. She lived her early years, including her elementary school years, with her family near St. Pauls and Tobermory, North Carolina. She had two older brothers and loved to be outside; she was somewhat of a tomboy. Later her family moved to the Fuquay-Varina, NC area where she settled into a new secondary school which combined with another school for desegregation while she was there. She loved to play basketball and was a key member of the girls basketball team. She was a playmaker and very good dribbler. She served as an exchange student for several weeks in Mexico which she thoroughly enjoyed. She was a graduate of North Carolina State University majoring in Business and Accounting; she was the first in her family to attend college.

As a young woman, Peggy became a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was a proud accomplishment for her and her family. After initial training in Quantico, VA, she reported for duty to the FBI office in Jacksonville, FL. In those days, women had only recently been allowed to join the FBI as Special Agents and they were few in number. Her first assignment provided some unique challenges in her new career. It was in Jacksonville that she met her future husband, Galen through a mutual friend. Her next assignment was in the Boston, MA office; the climate and culture there were eye-opening to a young woman of the South. She observed, learned and made adjustment to suit the new environment. It was at this time that she was first diagnosed with Lupus (SLE) which was a hindrance the rest of her life. She was newly married at this time and became a home owner in Wakefield for the first time with her husband, Galen.

Later in life while her children were in elementary school and beyond she supported their needs and interests, encouraged them, even becoming a Little League baseball coach. She completed part-time work for the FBI and State Department in Washington, DC and northern Virginia conducting interviews and making background reports. She became a key member of her church business management team and became the chief financial recorder.

She is survived by her husband, Galen and two sons, Daniel (and Azusa) of Okinawa, Japan; and David (and Moshe) of El Paso, TX. Three grandchildren, Jesse, Hinata and Millie. A brother, Wayne Byrd (and Carolyn) of Raleigh, NC. And numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents C.W. and Annie Byrd, and a brother, Ricky Byrd.
