Ann Herrell Brown, 82, of Alexandria VA, passed away peacefully in her home on November 8, 2024. Ann was born in Alexandria to Richard E. Herrell and Mary S. Herrell on July 17, 1942. She graduated from George Washington High School in Alexandria in 1960. She married George T. Brown on January 31, 1970. Ann earned her BA in Education from Kings College in New York. After graduating college, Ann taught Spanish and French in Alexandria at Thomas Jefferson High School then at her alma mater George Washington High School. In 1970 she began teaching at Francis C. Hammond High School also in Alexandria where she taught for 24 years and served as head of the language department. After leaving Francis C. Hammond High School, she taught Spanish at Minnie Howard High School’s Ninth Grade Center until her retirement in 1998. She was a charter member of the Honorary Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Beta Gamma Chapter in Alexandria. She was also a member of the Alexandria Retired Teachers Association. She loved to travel, was an avid bowler and a member of a bowling league. She loved the beach and shared that love with friends and family by offering her beach cottage for family vacations and retreats. Most of all, she loved the Lord. Even when her disease made communication difficult, she would still sing along to hymns. Ann is preceded in death by her beloved husband George and her parents Richard and Mary. Ann is survived by her brother Tom Herrell, four nephews, Jeff Brown (Dawn), Kevin Brown (Pam), Allen Brown (Robin) Todd Brown (Jill), three great nieces and four great nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday November 21, 2024 at Peninsula Memorial Park (12750 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA) with her nephew Jeff Brown officiating. Memorials in Ann’s name may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/. The family of Ann wishes to extend our sincere thanks to her friend and caregiver Fifi Mekuria and her friend and neighbor Brian Heath for the dedication and love they showed Ann. We can never thank you enough for all you did for her.
