Thelma P. Douglas, 99, of Springfield, passed away on August 27, 2022 at her residence. She was born on May 18, 1923 in Springfield to Frederick C. and Ruth Curtis Douglas and they both preceded her in death, Frederick in 1965 and Ruth in 1966.
Miss Douglas had six brothers: Fred, Lewis, Earl, Artis, Cyrl, and Clifford and three sisters: Leona (Douglas) Ross, Juanita Douglas and Hazel Douglas and they preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her daughter Jo Ann Douglas in 2011.
Thelma is survived by her children: Clark E. (Virginia) Douglas Sr., of Springfield and Raymond L. “Skip” Douglas of Springfield and Indianapolis, Indiana, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Miss Douglas grew up in Springfield and also lived in Gray, Indiana. She attended Iles School and Feitshans High School. She was a life member of Union Baptist Church and she received a UBC-ROC Heritage Day Tribute on December 15, 2013. She worked as a Home Technician for Dr. Robert and Helen Patton, Andy and Edie Glosecki, Attorney Robert and Helen Magill for fifty years and Dr. Robert and Helen Link.
Thelma enjoyed politics and she served as a Republican Precinct Judge for thirty years for City, State and National Elections. She also liked all sports. Her grandfather was Cupid Douglass who served in the Civil War in Company B of the 17th US Colored Infantry from November 16, 1863 until his regiment was mustered out of service on April 25, 1866. His name appears on plaque B-34 on the National African American Civil War Soldiers Monument in Washington, D.C.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday September 6, 2022 at Union Baptist Church, 1405 East Monroe Street with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 8:00am until the time of service Tuesday at church.
