“Russ” graduated from the University of Illinois as a mechanical engineer and opened his own firm, McClellan Engineering, in Rochester. He worked on many state buildings, including the Capitol and Illinois Supreme Court, where he crawled between floors to create a blueprint of its innerworkings.
When his daughter, Tara, was young, Russ held leadership positions related to her schooling and extracurriculars. When she was an adult, he helped with plays she wrote and produced. With her pleading and lots of memorization, he even acted in one. After his grandson, Connor, was newly adopted as an infant, Russ proudly told anyone who showed the slightest interest Connor’s entire adoption story. They were best buddies.
After retirement, Russ enjoyed volunteering for the Illinois State Museum’s Research & Collections Center and was named Volunteer of the Year twice. He also held leadership positions on his retirement community’s governing board.
He is survived by: daughter Tara McClellan McAndrew, grandson Connor McAndrew, and son-in-law William McAndrew.
Per his request, there will be no services.
