She was born on March 17, 1917 in Will County the daughter of Phil and Myrtle Brock Goodwin. She grew up on a farm near Wilmington and attended grade school in a one-room country school. She lived with her Grandmother Brock while attending Kankakee High School. She was very active in 4-H as a youth and lived in 4-H House while a student at the University of Illinois. After graduating from U of I in 1939, she taught home economics at New Holland and Galva and later did substitute teaching in the Chatham schools. She married Max M. Summers on August 15, 1942. During World War II they lived in several southern states while Max was serving in the Army Air Corp. After the family moved to Chatham in 1946, Phyllis joined the Chatham United Methodist Church where she held numerous leadership positions including missions, CROP Walk, and United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Sangamon County Home Bureau in 1947 and a member of the Auburn Chatham HCE unit. She was a 4-H leader for more than fifty-years and tutored adults through LLCC�s TEAL Program. She loved gardening, was a past member of the Springfield Garden Club, and volunteered at Lincoln Memorial Garden. Survivors include her three children: Dale Summers of Fargo, North Dakota, Martha (Louis) Vache of Jacksonville, and Ralph Summers of Stilwell, Kansas; five grandchildren: Steve (Lucinda) Vache of Wildwood, Missouri, Bill (Johanna) Vache of Columbus, Wisconsin, Jennifer (Erich) Ross of Omaha, Nebraska, Erin Summers (Andrew Winslow) of Durham, Maine, and Kristy Summers (Isaac Van Houton) of King Salmon, Alaska; nine great grandchildren: Reese, Natalie, Tyler, Sydney, and Amanda Vache, Max and Gus Winslow, and Jackson and Kennedy Ross; brother, Erwin (Marlene) Goodwin of Wilmington; sister, Helen McGranahan of Springfield; Jose Perez, an American Field Service Student from Chile; and her devoted caregiver, Mary Tackett of Chatham; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: William and Frank Goodwin, and husband: Max. Her family will greet friends from 3-5pm, Sunday, February 8, and from 10-11am, Monday, February 9, at Chatham United Methodist Church, 104 W. Chestnut Street, Chatham, IL. Her funeral will be at church, at 11am, Monday, February 9, with Rev. Sara Isbell officiating. Burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
