He was born in Cook County, Chicago, IL on May 23, 1934, the son of Glen and Helen Nickelson and they preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were a sister Nancy Collins, and a brother Robert Nickelson. He married Constance Mae DeCastro on August 18, 1954. They were divorced and she also preceded im in death. He married Cecelia Mae Britz on June 28, 1958.
After graduating from Pleasant Plains High School in 1952, he enlisted in the Illinois Air National Guard in November of 1952. He was activated in 1961 in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Illinois Air National Guard 183rd Wing in December of 1989.
He was a very active member of the Farmingdale Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder and Treasurer. His interests were always keeping busy, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Surviving are his wife Cecelia; five sons, David (wife Anna) Nickelson, Bradley (wife Robbin) Nickelson, Brian Nickelson, Jeffrey Nickelson, and Douglas (wife Brenda) Nickelson. One daughter Charisse (husband Chris) Froemke; 13 grandchildren, Israel, Jenna, Jake, Chandra, Chad, Phillip, Joshua, Lana, Chelsea, Christian, Chase, Heaven, and Douglas; 13 great-grandchildren, Landen, Luke, Lillian, Gwen, JayAnn, Benjamin, Ryleigh, Angelique, Trent, Nathan, Jaxon, Zayn, and Bryson; one sister Lois Irwin. There are also numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews surviving.
Services are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., where funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 at 10 am, with Rev. Lonna C. Lee officiating. A private burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.
