Michael was born on August 7, 1950, in Springfield, the son of Edsel Andrace and Betty (Showalter) Thomas of Oakford. He married Annette Kirby on May 27, 2006, in Petersburg.
He graduated PORTA High School in 1968. He then attended Illinois College in Jacksonville. Michael was a lifelong farmer, having farmed with his father and brother on their centennial farm in Menard County. He served as a member of the Menard County Soil and Conservation District, for many years. Michael had mechanical abilities marveled by many and was always willing to lend a hand to his family and those who shared the good fortune of his friendship. Michael had a keen interest in history and enjoyed the many trips. He and Ann traveled to places including England, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. His most favorite trip was Israel. He also enjoyed the time he spent at his winter home in Florida.
Michael Thomas exemplified a life well-lived and well-loved, and will be truly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Michael is survived by his wife, Annette “Ann”; sons, Matthew (Nichole) Thomas of Athens and Kyle (Tiffany) Thomas of Oakford; grandchildren, Hayden, Grant, Kaylie and Brylie; stepsons, Sean (Emily) Maisenbacher of Springfield, and Patrick Maisenbacher of Denver, Colorado; step-granddaughters, Bella and Hailey; brother, Kevin (Nancy) Thomas of Petersburg; nephew, Mark (MiKayla) Thomas; and niece, Betty (Dan) Haynes.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Memorial Gathering and Memorial Service: Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Butler Funeral Home – Springfield, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield. A Memorial Service will follow with Deacon Larry Smith officiating.
A private family burial will be held at a later date.
