Lloyd was born near Scott’s Mill in Brown County, Illinois, March 17 1930, the third child of Elbert C. and Nellie Dixon. He married Carlene Jean Herter on October 9, 1976 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Springfield. He is survived by his niece, Melanie Blume of Rushville, IL., and nephew, Kevin W. (Connie) Dixon of Mt. Sterling, IL. and one great nephew Morgan Dixon of Quincy. Mr. Dixon was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Louise Hilan of Inglewood, California in 1976, and brother, James W. Dixon of Mt. Sterling in 1986, and by his wife, Carlene Dixon in 2016.
Mr. Dixon attended the one-room, Bryns School, District 1 in Missouri Township through the seventh grade, Mt. Sterling Grade School and Brown County Community High School, and graduated from there in 1948. He graduated from Tri-State College, now Trine University, Angola, Indiana in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.
In 1948 Lloyd enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served during the period of the Berlin Airlift caused by Soviet Russia’s blockade of the city, and the Korean Conflict, including three years in Germany with the 36th Fighter Wing. He served briefly with the 2nd Air Division at Roslyn, New York, Long Island.
Lloyd had a thirty-six year professional career with the Illinois Department of Transportation, principally the Division of Highways. He served six years with the Bureau of Research at the AASHTO Road Test in Ottawa, and time with the Design Office at the Peoria District, and many years with the Central Bureau of Traffic and Local Roads and Streets in Springfield. Much of Mr. Dixon’s career supported the transportation efforts of the counties, townships, municipalities. He retired from IDOT in 1990.
He was a registered engineer, a life member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and a life member of the Illinois Highway Engineering Association.
Lloyd joined the Methodist Church as a teenager in Mt. Sterling. He was a member of Chatham United Methodist Church, and later a member of The Sugar Creek United Methodist Church in rural Chatham. During his years of retirement Lloyd was active in mission outreach and church building through-out the area. He was also a volunteer and supporter of Habitat for Humanity.
Lloyd and Carlene were active with the Chatham Chummy Chainers Square Dance Club for many years. Lloyd took pride in being able to see the humor in nearly every situation and enjoyed a good story well told.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Friday March 31, 2023 at Sugar Creek United Methodist Church, 1022 New City Road, Chatham, Illinois. The family will greet friends from 9:30am until the time of funeral service at church. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
