1935 - 2021
Judy passed away peacefully on March 15, 2021, at Memorial Medical Center after a brief hospitalization. Julia Maude Gard, named after both grandmothers, was born June 12, 1935, in Springfield to Jeanette and Donald Gard. A beloved sister of George, Peggy, Elynor, and of course, her twin, Jim, she often shared memories of their childhood in Fancy Prairie. Days were spent outdoors, riding bikes, fishing, gardening, and ice skating. Quiet moments were saved for thoughtful conversations with her father under the guise of refinishing furniture. A popular student at Athens High School, she was a cheerleader and talented drummer in the band and marching band.
Judy was working as a dental assistant in Springfield when she met her love, Dan. They were married on April 13, 1957 and began their life together, raising two daughters and nurturing friendships that lasted a lifetime. Tennis, dancing, bridge, and entertaining were just a few favorite pastimes. She loved dogs, books, jazz (volume high!), any beach, “doing lunch” and convertibles. Artistic and creative, Judy was a master quilter, gardener, gourmet cook, and had a keen eye for fine art and interior design.
A dedicated community volunteer, Judy enjoyed working behind the scenes without fanfare or recognition. Over time, her leadership positions supported the Springfield Art Association, Girl Scouts, Junior League, Symphony Orchestra, Lincoln Academy of Illinois, and Spoon River Questers. She was appointed by the mayor to the Springfield Tree Commission and served as secretary. A devoted congregant of Temple Israel for over 55 years, Judy taught kindergarten and was active in the Sisterhood.
Judy is survived by her husband, Daniel; daughter Lorie “Leah” (Eric) Brunner and precious granddaughter, Anna, of Philadelphia, PA; daughter Sally Weisman of Hartford, CT; brother James (Betty) Gard of Mendota; sister Elynor (Chub) Nance of Athens; sister-in-law Eileen Paris; cherished nieces and nephews; and adored loved ones, Sarah, Michelle, and Adam (Lisa) White of Connecticut. The family is eternally grateful for Judy’s caregivers, whose compassion, kindness, and humor made her final years at home wonderful.
Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, Springfield. A private burial service will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery, co-officiated by Rabbi Barry Marks and Rabbi Arthur Stern.
