Jon was born on May 12, 1937, in Springfield, the son of George L. and Gwendolyn E. (Hemion) Hockenyos. He married Sandra Greenleaf on August 22, 1959, at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Jon graduated from Springfield High School in 1955 and then earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois. He was the Owner and President of Sentinel Pest Control for 50 years, two-time president of the Illinois Pest Control Association as well as serving as the organization’s legislative liaison for a number of years. Jon was a member of the Sertoma Club, an Elder and Chair of the board of Deacons at Westminster Church, and an avid model railroader and member of the Once-A-Month model railroad club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dr. Karen Hockenyos-Goodwin.
Jon is survived by his wife, Sandy of Springfield; sons, Jon E. (Rebecca Yearly) Hockenyos of Austin, TX, and James (Karen) Hockenyos of Springfield; daughter, Julie H. (James) Coyle of Round Rock, TX; grandchildren, Lyn (Matt) Henson, Clara Coyle, and Jack, Sam, Luke, Alexander, and Elizabeth Hockenyos; siblings, Kristin Tipps of Springfield, and George Mark (Jean) Hockenyos of Raleigh, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. pm on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut St., Springfield, IL 62704. A Memorial Ceremony will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Blythe Denham Kieffer officiating. There will a reception immediately after the service. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
A private burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park.
