She was born on February 15, 1937, in Springfield, the second daughter of James A. and Mary Stubbs Burns. She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her father, James A.; her mother, Mary Margaret Smith; and her step-mother, Madeline Kelley Burns. She now joins her dear sisters, Donna Burns Andrews and Karen Kelley Schwarberg; three brothers, James D., Stephen Burns, and Darrell Kelley; and her beloved son, Jeffrey Schultz.
Jackie lived all of her life in Springfield, IL. She attended Enos Grade School, Third Presbyterian Church and Sunday Schools, and Lanphier High School, where she graduated in 1955 as valedictorian of her class of 200. She continued to take classes at both Springfield College in Illinois and Lincoln Land Community College.
Jackie worked for Franklin Life Insurance Company, Ridgely Elementary School, their family owned business, Metzger Drug Store, and the State of IL. She married Donald P. Schultz in 1958 and is the mother of Linda Schultz Birks (Devon).
She married John C. Stuemke in 1987 and became step-mother to Barbara Stuemke Burkhardt (Craig) and Lawrence B. Stuemke (Amy). Jackie was a member of St. John’s ELCA Church in Springfield. She was an avid quilter and loved introducing her craft to others. She and John enjoyed travel and saw many beautiful places in the world. Jackie especially loved the Rocky Mountains and Estes Park, CO. She enjoyed her monthly suppers with her Lanphier Dinner Club.
She is survived by her husband and best friend, John C. Stuemke; her daughter, Linda Birks (Devon) of Pawnee; her step-daughter, Barbara Stuemke Burkhardt (Craig) of Washington, D.C.; her step-son, Lawrence B. Stuemke (Amy) of Bozeman, MT; and her daughter-in-law, Diane Schultz of Fort Collins, CO. She leaves behind in love five grandchildren, Matt (Jackie) Birks and Maggie Birks, both of Pawnee, Gloria Lily Buckhardt of Washington, D.C., and Jane and Calvin Andrews of Bozeman, MT. She also leaves a precious great-grandson, Reed Birks. Jackie was the proud aunt to ten nephews and two nieces.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:15 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 2477 West Washington St., Springfield. A Funeral Ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Linda Strader officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
