She learned to drive a tractor and help out with various farm duties. She was a Tomboy! She was one of 6 siblings. She went to Jacksonville High School where she met and fell in love with her high school sweetheart James Mason. After graduating, James was drafted in the Army and they were married February 11, 1953. They had 4 children, Jacqueline, Sheryl, a set of twin boys Ronald and Donald. Ronald passed at birth.
They then packed up and moved to California in 1959. Then came the birth of Jacqueline in 1961. After raising the children Joan went to work. She worked at a friend’s plumbing business one day a week. She enjoyed camping, sewing, and various crafts, and also meeting other women for coffee.
Evelyn was a grandmother to 9, she was a great-grandmother to 13, and a great-great grandmother to 2. She loved with all her heart every one of them. She also had and loved many “bonus” children. Everyone who had the pleasure to meet and know her knew she was someone special.
Evelyn is also survived by 1 sister Darlene Driver, and 2 brothers, Eugene Walker and James Walker.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield. Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023 from 10 am until time of the memorial service at 11 am, all at the funeral home. Now her remains will be sent to the Arlington National Cemetery in Riverside, CA where they will be placed with Dad’s in the wall.
