She was born on February 6, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Vincenti) Koury. She married Raymond Springer on June 25, 1950 in Jamaica, NY, and he preceded her in death in August of 2006.
Emily graduated from Jamaica High School, NY in 1943. She attended Community College while working as a school secretary for the New York City Board of Education for 21 years. She retired in 1987 to be closer to her grandchildren. She was a former member of the United Presbyterian Church in Elmont, NY.
She is survived by her daughter Marianne (husband Louis) Scannura of Springfield, IL; her son Raymond (wife Arlene) Springer of Wyckoff, NJ; 5 grandchildren, Emily R. (husband Michael) Ritzer, of Loveland, CO., Ryan L. Scannura and Daniel S. Scannura, of Denver, CO., Christopher R. Scannura, of Springfield, IL., and Susan L. Springer of Wyckoff, NJ.
Besides her parents and her husband, Raymond, she was preceded in death by 1 brother Albert Koury, and 2 sisters, Katherine Koury and Lorraine Saracino.
Emily had a passion for helping those in need, and was active in the senior citizens center after retirement in Springfield. She had a life long passion for cooking, specifically Syrian cooking. She loved swimming on the beaches of Long Island, where the lifeguards often had to blow their whistles to wave her back in. She loved spending time with all her grandchildren and enjoyed watching them swim. She impressed upon her family the importance of living a faithfully led and healthy life by her own example.
Services are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield. Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Chapel in St. Joseph’s Home, on February 16, 2017, with Reverend Keith Anderson officiating. Inurnment will take place immediately following at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Home, or Chatham United Methodist Church, Chatham, IL.
