George Mourouzis, age 92, of Springboro, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023. He was born in Uhrichsville, Ohio, on September 8, 1930, to Theodore and Sophia Mourouzis. An American first-born of Greek immigrants, he lived the American dream. His father firmly felt the way to succeed was through education. In 1948 George graduated from Tuscarawas Warwick High where he was voted junior and senior class president and lettered in football, basketball, and track. Awarded a football scholarship to Wittenberg University, he lettered four years as an offensive guard/defensive lineman, majored in Education, and graduated in 1952. During the second month of his first teaching job at Dundee High, he was drafted into the Army and served two years at Aberdeen Proving Grounds during the Korean War. Returning to education, George was a middle school teacher and a junior high principal at Carlisle Schools. In 1969 he received his Master of Education from Miami University. George served as superintendent for three southern Ohio school districts: Germantown, Valley View, and Trotwood-Madison. He concluded his 45 years in education as director of support services for Springboro Community City Schools.
As a Christian, George loved his Lord, was a charter member and ordained elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and joyfully sang in the choir for many years. Community service included memberships in Trotwood Rotary and Springboro Lions Clubs. An avid golfer, George had the incredible distinction of scoring four hole-in-ones: his first at Big Bend of Uhrichsville and his next three all on hole #12 at Heatherwoode of Springboro. As the father of three boys, he enjoyed coaching and cheering for his sons in soccer, football, track, ice hockey, and Tae Kwon Do. In 1981, to demonstrate Trotwood-Madison administrators’ school spirit, George issued a challenge: if Trotwood-Madison beat Piqua in the football regionals at Welcome Stadium, he would do the funky chicken dance. After Trotwood won in the last 17 seconds, down the field danced Mourouzis, leading the band. A patriotic Army veteran, George loved his country and was honored to serve as the 1999 Grand Marshall of the Springboro Memorial Day Parade. Abruptly, successful quadruple heart bypass surgery prompted a life-changing, life-long dedication to exercising at the Coffman YMCA. Kind and gentle George Mourouzis was truly blessed with a long, happy life.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Barbara; his loving sons Peter Paul and wife Elizabeth, Andrew James and wife Ly, and Michael George and wife Rebecca; his cherished grandchildren Jamieson Peter, Emily Elizabeth, Kevin Nguyen,
Alexander Jamieson, Christopher Cole, and Caroline Georgiana. George was preceded in death by his parents, older sister Zoie Famal and husband Gus, older sister Alexandra Reese and husband Wayne, and younger brother Nick Mourouzis and wife Marilyn.
George’s families thank the wonderful, loving care givers, aids, nurses, and staff of Bickford of Middletown and the caring staff of Day City Hospice of Centerville.
