Harold Wyman Malmsten, Jr (BUD) was born on November 7, 1937, in Minneapolis, MN to Rev. and Mrs. H. W. Malmsten (Amy Groff). He entered Heaven on May 3, 2018, after living a righteous life, loving well and teaching his family how to love.
Bud spent his youth in Minneapolis, singing first tenor in men’s quartets and choirs in high school, college and seminary. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he entered Bethel College and Seminary in St. Paul, MN, graduating with degrees in Music Education and Theology.
In 1963, Bud moved to Portland, OR, and became Assistant Pastor in charge of Youth and Music at Temple Baptist Church, serving until November 1975. Bud married Patsy Fields Fosmark June 27, 1974 and became Daddy to Patsy’s son Michael. They added son Terry in 1975 before moving to Spokane where Bud became Pastor of Loma Vista Baptist Church. While in Spokane, Brad and Sara were added to the family. Summer vacations often took the family to “the cabin” in Crosslake, MN and to many Baptist General Conference (BGC) Annual meetings.
Bud’s 42 years in Spokane included completing his Master’s in Counseling at Whitworth College and establishing Freedom First Counseling Service with Patsy. Bud taught Driver’s Education with B&B Driving School, was Chaplain for Horizon Hospice and substitute teacher for Nine Mile School District. Bud volunteered as Moderator and Parliamentarian for BGC and Columbia Conference meetings, at the Union Gospel Mission, as Political Caucus Chair, and as member of Nine Mile Child Protection Team.
Bud’s parents preceded him to Heaven. He is survived by his wife, Patsy, sons Michael (Christy Ann) Poulsbo, WA, Terry (Angelina) Colbert, WA, Brad (Ami) Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and daughter Sara, Spokane, WA, and six grandchildren, Brian, Grace, Alexis, Nathan, Reid and Mira. Bud also leaves behind sisters Marlys Arenson, Mounds View, MN, and Fran (Tom) Maynard, Portland, OR, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held in Spokane Thursday, May 24, 6:30 pm, at Shiloh Hills Fellowship, 207 E Lincoln Road, and in Portland on Saturday, May 26, 11 am at Temple Baptist Church, 7th & Clackamas.
