Elizabeth K. Johnson, affectionately known as “Grandma Betty” to many, went to meet her Savior after 100 blessed years on March 21, 2014 in Spokane, Washington. Born in Chicago, Illinois on January 6, 1914 to Valentine and Elizabeth Dewey. She spent her youth in Pueblo, Colorado where she graduated from Central High School. Betty was a woman who had a strong work ethic and a strong love of family. She would tell anyone who asked that the most important thing in her life was her family. Betty was a talented baker and she loved crafts, especially crochet. A highlight of her career was working at Boeing in Seattle during World War ll where she worked in the gun shop. She was very proud of her speed and proficiency in taking apart and rebuilding a 50 caliber machine gun. A British officer was touring the plant one day and Betty was selected to be in a photo with the British officer appearing to help her into a turret of a plane. The photo went worldwide. She also loved working as a bookkeeper at Harvey’s in Spokane. Betty and Cliff lived several years in La Grande, Oregon where she was quite involved in the Blue Mountain Chapter of the Eastern Star and went through all the chairs. Her grandchildren have many fond memories of summers spent with their grandparents in La Grande. When it was time to step into the later years of retirement, Betty and Cliff blessed their family by moving back to Spokane so they could be near their children and grandchildren. Betty’s family wishes to thank the loving staff at Sullivan Park Care Center for the wonderful care she received in the last years of her life. Betty was proceeded in death by her husband, Cliff Johnson in 1996. She is survived by her sons, Skip Johnson and his wife, Carol and Bob Johnson and his wife, Gail.
