Born on August 6, 1960, to Dennis and Aristea Kounelias Pappas, Basil resided in Paterson, New Jersey, and graduated from Passaic County Technical-Vocational School. He took great pride in having been baptized at St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church, where he also had the honor of serving as an altar boy during his youth. Basil and his former wife Elsa M. Pappas moved to Sparta, NJ in July of 1991, where they raised their four loving children. Basil recently retired after a lengthy career as a tire technician and salesman. Following his retirement, he took great satisfaction in assisting his son, Dennis Pappas, as a construction assistant.
Basil is predeceased by his mother, Aristea Kounelias Pappas; his father, Dennis S. Pappas; and his eldest brother, Sam S. Pappas.
He is survived by his four children: daughters Angie Marie Hawthorne (husband Jarrett) of Sparta, New Jersey, and Tammie Crystal Mastrofilippo (husband Benjamin) of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and sons Dennis Casper Pappas of Wharton, New Jersey, and Adam Cosmo Pappas of Manhattan, New York. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Joseph J. Mastrofilippo, Jarrett T. Hawthorne, Savannah M. Mastrofilippo, and Juliette E. Hawthorne; brothers Jim Pappas and Tom Pappas; nephew Josh Pappas; and his two goddaughters, Margarita Sanchez and Jessica Tuttle.
Basil enjoyed spending time by the ocean, dancing, and as a Papou, cherished the moments spent with his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for gardening and possessed a remarkable green thumb, as well as a strong desire to help anyone in need.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 11, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with a prayer service commencing at 11 AM. All services will take place at Goble Funeral Home, located at 22 Main Street, Sparta, New Jersey 07871, and will be officiated by Greek Orthodox priest Father John Theodosion.
